Goree Island - Maison des Esclaves—The House of Slaves - Nothing can prepare you for the overwhelming flood of emotions that rush through you when you step onto Goree Island. The cobblestone streets, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, seem to guide you toward a place where history’s darkest moments are etched into every corner. This island, so serene on the surface, holds the grim history of the transatlantic slave trade—where human lives were commodified, where brutality from Europeans was the norm, and where the seeds of centuries-long oppression were sown. It’s a place that feels both haunted and hallowed, and as I walked its paths, I realized that I was not ready for what I was about to witness.
My guide, had told me to prepare myself. But no amount of preparation can brace you for the weight of history that hits you square in the chest when you approach the doorway marked Maison des Esclaves—the House of Slaves. The moment you see the weathered wooden frame and the words etched above it, your heart starts racing. You realize you’re about to enter a space where lives were shattered, dreams were destroyed, and where unspeakable horrors unfolded behind these very walls. This is where the first human beings—men, women, and children—were kidnapped from their homeland, shackled, and led to the waiting slave ships that would carry them across the Atlantic into a nightmare.

The best tour ever - Amadou was simply the best tour guide we’ve ever had! The day was planned perfectly. Transportation was amazing, very comfortable. Gorée island was the highlight of the tour. Amadou also helped us find items for a great price at the local market. 100% recommend Agsil for any Senegal visitors!

Great day with Amadou - We had a great and informative time on our tour. You see so much during the day and we were in a nice air conditioned van with driver Alfa and our guide Amadou, who is just as lovely as the reviews say. He is kind, knowledgeable, and he did not let anyone hassle us which was a big plus. He also has a lovely sense of humor. Everything we saw was great but the African Renaissance statue and Gorée Island were stand outs. Also we had an incredible guide on Gorée and please ask Amadou to set you
up with him. Five stars! Lindsay and Hannah

A wonderful day in Dakar and Goree - It was a fabulous day tour with a fabulous guide and driver. Amadou was the best tour guide ever! They arrived at my hotel exactly on time in a very nice car. We visited many of Dakar’s important sites. Amadou’s knowledge of both contemporary and historical events and places made the day enjoyable and a great learning experience. Both men were very polite and gracious. Everything, including the island of Goree was very well organized. If I return to Dakar one day, I will certainly ask for Amadou

Best tour in Dakar - This was an amazing experience. The guide was so kind and went above and beyond. The tour itself was great, very educational and everyone explained the answers to all the questions I had. This is a must-do when in Dakar.

The place where the slaves left - It was an interesting excursion due to its history, the island has a heavy history due to everything it represents, it is a poor island with little to visit and the restaurant where you have the meal included in the excursion is very poor
