From Surf to Summit: A Caribbean Surfer’s Journey Through the Scottish Highlands
Trading the Caribbean waves for the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, I embarked on a thrilling tour from Dalmeny. With a personalized route and breathtaking landscapes, this adventure was a refreshing change from island life.
A Highland Adventure Begins
The Scottish Highlands have always been a place of intrigue for me, a surfer who spends most of his time chasing waves and sun in the Caribbean. The idea of trading my board shorts for a cozy sweater and exploring the rugged beauty of Scotland was too tempting to resist. So, I found myself in Dalmeny, ready to embark on the Highland Tour that promised a day filled with breathtaking landscapes and cultural encounters.
Our guide, Ross, was a gem. He reached out to us before the tour to understand our interests, ensuring that our journey was personalized. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his patience, especially with the two young kids in our group, was commendable. As we set off, the anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable.
Kilmahog and the Highland Cows
Our first stop was Kilmahog Woollen Mill, a charming spot where we were greeted by the gentle giants of the Highlands – the Highland cows. These shaggy creatures were a delight to feed, and their calm demeanor was a stark contrast to the energetic waves I’m used to riding. The mill itself was a treasure trove of souvenirs, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few keepsakes to remember this unique experience.
As we continued our journey, Ross shared stories of the land, weaving history and folklore into our adventure. The drive through the Highlands was like a moving painting, with each turn revealing a new masterpiece of nature. The lush greenery and towering mountains were a refreshing change from the endless blue of the ocean.
Glencoe’s Majestic Beauty
Next, we arrived at Glencoe, a place that truly took my breath away. The Three Sisters of Glencoe stood majestically, their peaks shrouded in mist, creating a mystical atmosphere. It was a photographer’s paradise, and I found myself snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this awe-inspiring landscape.
Lunch at Spean Bridge Woollen Mill was a cozy affair, with hearty Scottish fare that warmed us from the inside out. The mill offered another chance to shop for souvenirs, but I was more interested in soaking up the views and reflecting on the morning’s adventures.
A Picturesque Pause in Pitlochry
Our final stop was the picturesque village of Pitlochry. This charming spot was the perfect place for a quick comfort break and a leisurely stroll. The village’s quaint streets and friendly locals made it feel like a scene from a storybook.
As we made our way back to Edinburgh, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the day’s experiences. The Scottish Highlands had offered a different kind of adventure, one that was as thrilling as any wave I’ve ridden. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best journeys are the ones that take you out of your comfort zone and into the unknown.
