The park is a peaceful oasis in the arid zone of Sri Lanka and is definitely worth a visit!

The palace is located in the heart of the island between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level. Sigiriya rock plateau, formed from magma of an extinct volcano, is 200 meters higher than the surrounding jungles. Its view astonishes the visitors with the unique harmony between nature and the human imagination. The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains

How long is the visit?

The entire visit of Sigiriya rock would be about 2 hours including visits to the gardens and water canals. It would be approximately 40 minutes to climb to the top, 1 hour at the top and 20 minutes get back to the ground.

Natural Gems and Gemmological Museum - Sri Lanka, famed to being the isle of Gems has many gems and jewellery available in retail shops in Kandy. Visit the gem shops and be amazed by the collection of beautiful gemstones that have been cut and polished from the rough stones to the beautiful eyes that would glisten from a distance. See the Royal blue sapphire that paved the way for Sri Lanka’s gem industry, after a sapphire was presented to the Queen of England in 1981. This stone eventually became a part of the engagement ring that Prince Charles had used when he proposed to Lady Diana Spencer.

Popular gems found in Sri Lanka and in Kandy are Sapphires, Star Sapphires, Cat’s Eyes, Rubies, Star Rubies, Alexandrite and many other semi-precious stones. Apart from the blue sapphires, the pink and yellow sapphires are also popular.

Kandy View Point - Kandy View Point Climb the hill by Kandy Lake to reach Kandy viewpoint and receive a view of the city that cannot be beaten. As a popular tourist spot, the area brings in a large number of peddlers, though they often sell sub-par items. The area also has a reputation for high pickpocket activity, so keep an eye on your belongings. From the hill, you can enjoy great views over the lake and the city as a whole.

Kandy’s pride and prestige, the Temple of the Tooth – Sri Dalada Maligawa is the city’s most sacred and vital attraction. Its significance reflects to the legacy of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha being encased in a golden chest. The Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and was kept in various temples across the island and eventually kept at this Temple of the Tooth. It was built in the 1600s but renovations, additions and enhancements have been done until the Kingdom of Kandy fell to the British in 1815.

The dress code should be modest with shoulders and knees being covered. Footwear will have to be removed.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It attracts 2 million visitors annually. It is near the Mahaweli River. It is renowned for its collection of orchids.

Ramboda Waterfall - Entrance Fee:

Ramboda Ella Falls is a stunning waterfall that is 358 feet high – the 11th highest waterfall in the country, and 729th in the world. It is located in the Pussellawa region just by the Ramboda Bridge after the Ramboda Tunnel when travelling from Peradeniya, Kandy.

From the A5 highway just above the bridge, you can get a great view of the middle section of the falls. From the main road, closer to the entrance of the tunnel, you can get a side view of the bottom section of the falls. Just before the Ramboda bridge, there is a pathway which leads to a lookout point which gives a spectacular view of the most impressive part of the waterfall. This walk can be rather tedious over rocks and steep slopes but it is well worth the climb once you reach the lookout point. To get a better view of the lower section, a short walk to reach the bottom of waterfall known as the, ‘Ramboda Basin’.

Seetha Amman Kovil - Dedicated to Sitadevi, the wife of Lord Rama is the Sita Amman Temple, sitting in the hills of Nuwara Eliya. Regarded with abiding devotion by Hindus, it is considered to be the only such temple in the world. It can be found 5 kilometres en route the road from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy. This temple is special and significant in relevance to the story behind its origin – it was where Sitadevi had been imprisoned by King Ravana because she had refused to stay in his palace approximately 5000 years ago.

Devotees flock to this area where Sita had bathed, the rock she had sat on and where she had spent her time in prayer. Many of the people believe that this phase of the epic tale of Ramayana had taken place here, thereby making this area a popular tourist location.
The pooja timings of the temple are from 8am – 1pm in the mornings and 2pm – 6:30pm in the afternoons.

Nuwara Eliya to Ella (Overnight stay in Ella)

Nine Arches Bridge - Spanning 91 metres and 24 metres high, the architectural brilliance of Nine Arches Bridge stretches on the Demodara loop. The stunning nine arches generate a picturesque place surrounded by thick jungle and tea plantations.

Also titled, Bridge in the Sky, because when you stand below the bridge and look up you can see the sky through the nine arches. Almost a century old, it was constructed in 1921 amidst picturesque foliage of the Hill country, and stands as a specimen of railway construction during the British colonial epoch. Due to the shortage of steel during World War II, the bridge was constructed solely using cement and stone bricks.

Little Adam’s Peak View Point - It is named so due to its striking similarity to the sacred mountain Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), where according to Sinhalese Buddhist tradition, lies the preserved and sacred footprint of Lord Buddha, instilled during one of his visits to Sri Lanka.

Little Adam’s Peak, also referred to as Mini Adam’s Peak, is another popular Ella hiking destination in the vicinity. The 1,141 metre peak is a relatively less demanding hike than that of Ella Rock. The hike takes you through boundless scenic tea plantations, taking only approximately 45 minutes to complete. The summit of Little Adam’s Peak is astounding with incredible 360 degree views of the misty mountains in the area and is best visited at dawn or dusk.

It is approximately 4 km from Ella Town and is considered one of the easiest hikes in area. Beginning from Ella Town, towards Passara Road lies the foot of the rock, just passing Flower Garden Resort.

Independence Square - The Independence Square is one the best places to relax in Colombo. It is located in the affluent Cinnamon Gardens district in Colombo. It serves as a monument, a park and a walking area as well. There is a memorial hall, the memorial museum, a vast green lawn and the Arcade. The Independence Memorial Hall was constructed in the year 1948 in order to commemorate our independence from the British rule. The Memorial Hall is an open sided hall with beautifully carved cement columns and a shapely tiled roof. Statues of seated lions surround this hall which is used for ceremonial functions. The structure of this hall bears close resemblance to the Magul Maduwa of the last Kandyan Kingdom. Towards the inner end of the Memorial Hall is the Memorial Museum. This museum consists of stone busts of all the people who fought valiantly for our country’s independence.

Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre - The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre is a performance centre to showcase large scale theatrical productions. The concept was created by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa with the intention of honouring our country’s history of theatre by offering state patronage to performers. This building was designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design while the project was executed under the supervision of local architects. The structural design was inspired by the Lotus Pond found in Polonnaruwa. Construction of this performing arts theatre was carried out by China and the funds required for this project was provided by the Chinese Government as a grant. This building covers approximately 14,000 square metres of floor area.

The Colombo Lotus Tower is 350 meters (1150 feet) dominates the skyline of Colombo. Construction of the Lotus Tower commenced in 2012. It is the ‘tallest self-supported structure in South Asia’. It will also become the world’s 19th tallest tower and will be 24 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This tower will be used for communications, leisure and observation purposes. As the name suggests, the design of this tower and structure is influenced by the lotus flower, which symbolizes purity in Sri Lankan culture. The construction of the Colombo Lotus Tower is funded by the Chinese EXIM bank.

Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - Started by the renowned scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala in the late 19th century, Gangaramaya is one of the oldest temples in Colombo. Gangaramaya is not merely just a temple; it is a place of learning and a cultural center. This temple is situated in close proximity to the Beira Lake. Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai and Indian architectural influences can be seen when observing the structures of this temple. The Gangaramaya temple happens to be the most visited temple in Colombo and is organizes the largest and vibrant Vesak Festival every year.
Seema Malaka Meditation Center is run by the Gangaramaya Temple and was designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, after the original structure sank completely under water. In order to prevent in from sinking Bawa created three floating platforms connected by pontoon walkways and them to the base of the shore through stone pillars.

Pettah - Pettah is one of the oldest districts in Colombo. This multi-ethnic Pettah district is one of the busiest, crowded and most interesting places in Colombo. Pettah market is basically a stretch of shops starting from Olcott Mawatha to the main street and beyond. At the Pettah market you will be able to find absolutely anything you want and it is a common sight to see three-wheelers racing in a hurry, vendors pushing carts piled with goods and people hastening along the streets.

There are vendors selling fruits and vegetables, meat, clothing items, electronic items and even jewelry. The Pettah Bazaar is the place to be if you wish to buy interesting items at affordable prices. The Pettah Market lies outside the remains of Colombo Fort and is basically a stretch of shops selling all kinds of goods.
