Attracted by the grasslands near the reservoir during the arid season, the elephants, usually numbering between 150-200, gather in this area, which is adequately sustained by the Minneriya tank. Some records even suggest the count can go up to 700 elephants. These wildlife behemoths migrate from Wasgamuwa National Park, utilizing the nourishment and shelter provided by Minneriya Park’s forest. Minneriya is a popular tourist destination primarily due to these elephant gatherings, particularly in the dry months.
