- Ritigala - Ritigala is accessible from the turn-off on the Habarana-Anuradhapura Road, 12 km from Habarana.
Ritigala Mountain, standing at 766 meters above sea level, is the tallest mountain in the north-central dry plains of Sri Lanka. The mountain, approximately three miles long and two miles wide at its broadest point, is covered with dense jungle home to wild elephants, leopards, and bears. It serves as the watershed for the Malwatu Oya, which supplies the Nachaduwa tank, and the Kalueba Ela, which feeds Huruluwewa. Ritigala Mountain has been designated a Strict Natural Reserve to preserve its untouched environment. The mountain’s frequent cloud cover and mist create a flora more typical of the central hills of the wet zone than the dry plains. The upper part of the mountain is renowned for its flora, including some rare species, and it also hosts a variety of wild orchids.
- Kala Wewa - Constructed by King Datusena in 307 B.C., Kala Wewa is a twin reservoir complex (Kala Wewa & Balalu Wewa) with a capacity of 123 million cubic meters. This reservoir complex features a stone spillway and three main sluices. From the central major sluice, a 40-foot-wide channel transports water to irrigate thousands of acres of paddy fields, ending at the historic capital Anuradhapura’s Tissa Wewa tank, winding over 87 km (54 mi) at a gradient of 6 inches per mile. It stands as another marvel of ancient hydraulic engineering in Ceylon.
