Additional Information

Dendera is the location of the temple devoted to the Goddess Hathor, who is associated with love, music, happiness, motherhood, turquoise stones, and the sycamore tree. The entire temple complex encompasses around 40,000 square meters and is protected by a substantial mudbrick wall. People have lived in Dendera since primitive times, making it a vital oasis along the Nile riverbank. It’s believed that the pharaoh Pepi I (approx. 2250 BC) constructed something on this site and there are indications of a temple from the Eighteenth Dynasty (approx. 1500 BC). The earliest standing structure inside the compound today is the mammisi erected by Nectanebo II – the last of the native pharaohs (360–343 BC). The diverse features within the complex include:

  • The Hathor temple (the primary temple)
  • The Temple of Isis’s birth
  • Sacred Lake
  • Sanatorium
  • Mammisi of Nectanebo II
  • Christian Basilica
  • Roman Mammisi
  • a Barque shrine
  • Gateways of Domitian and Trajan
  • the Roman Kiosk

Great experience! - The drive from Luxor to Dendera is approximately 2hr , but it is worth it. The interior of the temple was very impressive. The guide was humble and explained all about the temple as much as he could with the time we had.
