- Kariakoo Market - The tour begins at Kariakoo Market, which dates back to 1916. After the British took control of Dar es Salaam from the Germans during World War I, they constructed a depot for their carrier corps. Once it was no longer needed, the Governor permitted its use as a market, leading to the name “Carrier Corps Market,” which Swahili speakers pronounce as “Kariakoo.” This name has endured to this day.
- St. Joseph’s Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam - Following the visit to Kariakoo Market, the tour proceeds past the Uhuru Torch Monument at Mnazi Mmoja, the old Boma of Dar es Salaam, and finally reaches the Roman Catholic Cathedral overlooking the harbor. St. Joseph’s is the first Roman Catholic Cathedral in Mainland Tanzania. The main structure was completed over five years, from 1897 to 1902, and was consecrated on October 15, 1908. It is beautifully designed in Gothic style, featuring a shingled spire, a vaulted interior, and carved relief above the main altar. The interior still showcases the original German inscriptions.
- Askari Monument - After visiting the Catholic Cathedral, the tour continues to the Lutheran Cathedral and then to the Askari Monument. The Askari Monument was erected by the British colonial government, replacing a statue installed by the German colonial government in 1911 to commemorate Major Herman Von Wissmann, the first Governor of German East Africa, appointed in 1895. The British dismantled it in 1916 following Germany’s defeat and withdrawal during World War I.
- National Museum of Tanzania - The Museum and House of Culture (MHC) is Tanzania’s first National Museum, established in 1937 and opened to the public on December 7, 1940. Initially named the King George V Memorial Museum, after King George V of Great Britain who passed away in 1936, it was renamed the National Museum in 1962.
- Kivukoni Fish Market - En route to the fish market, the tour passes by the Tanzania State House (photography is prohibited). At Kivukoni Fish Market, visitors can observe fishermen selling their catch to restaurateurs and homemakers. The market is divided into two main sections with eight zones, one of which is the auction area. In other sections, fish are cleaned, cooked, and resold at higher prices.
- Village Museum - After visiting the fish market, there is a lunch break (payment is made directly to the hotel). Public transport is then taken from Kivukoni to Morocco Road, followed by a tuk-tuk (Rickshaw) ride to the Village Museum. Known as “Kijiji cha Makumbusho” in Swahili, the Village Museum is located along Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road in Kijitonyama. It features around twenty traditional houses representing over 120 ethnic groups in Tanzania, including furnished huts, cattle pens, and meeting places. Visitors can enter the houses and enjoy traditional ngoma (dance) sessions arranged for them.
- Mwenge Woodcarvers Market - The tour concludes with a visit to Mwenge Woodcarvers Market, where various woodcarving products made from the renowned African black tree (Ebony Tree) are displayed.
After the tour, the driver will return guests to their hotel.
- Dar es Salaam - At the end of the tour, the driver will drop guests off at their hotel.

This private tour was... - This private tour was excellent! From the time I booked the excursion Mansoor was always in contact with me as to what time he would be at the cruise ship to pick us up. He always had cold water available his mini van was in excellent condition and clean.
We followed the itinerary that they suggested to see the most important things. The fish market was very interesting on how fish was sold, cleaned and taken to market. The local village museum was interesting on how they lived in the earlier days. We saw both christian churches which was very nice.
I can’t say enough positive things about Mansoor and how he took care of us the whole day!

Getting ready for Tanzania - We booked the city tour for our first day in Tanzania without knowing what to expect in Dar es Salaam. Mansoor Mohamed and Sylvester picked us up at the hotel, which was a bit out of town, and on the way into the city, we heard a lot from Sylvester about the history of the city and the current situation. We had a full schedule, but the two of them still accommodated our wishes. We spontaneously walked through a very busy business district. Sylvester was very thoughtful and introduced us to the country's specialties and the mentality of the residents. Two church visits, a visit to the fish market and two museums were still on the agenda. We took our time at the fish market and then went first to the Tanzanian National Museum, where we learned a lot thanks to Sylvester's extensive knowledge and an interesting discussion developed about the exhibits. Afterwards we visited the Village Museum with the various traditional village houses. Here, too, Sylvester knew how to answer every question. At the end of the museum visit, there was the opportunity to see a traditional dance and music performance. It was nice that we had lunch together and then had a coffee to round off the day. Mansoor Mohamed and Sylvester speak English at a very high level. Sylvester is a very well-read and considerate guide, Mansoor Mohamed is an excellent driver. Thank you.

Late pick up. - The driver pick up at the hotel was over 1.5 hours late. At the minimum, he should have called the front desk the reason for his delay, such as, traffic, car problems, an accident, etc. There was no communication on the morning of the pick up and I was left at the hotel lobby wondering whether, I have been scammed.
