Highlights
  • Tiger Hill Observation Deck - Tiger Hill is the highest point in the Darjeeling area. An early morning trip to witness the sunrise is a must. Watching the rising sun strike the colossal Mt. Kanchenjunga range of snow-capped peaks in a blaze of rapidly changing colors is truly spectacular. Tiger Hill is now part of a nature preserve, the meadows of which are suitable for picnics. From Tiger Hill, take a small walk downhill to visit the Sincheal temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga.
  • Batasia Loop - The heritage train makes a 360-degree turn at this gigantic railway loop almost 5 kilometers from town. Built to help the steam train negotiate the steep terrain, Batasia Loop is strategically located to offer a panoramic view of the mountain beyond. Within the loop lies a war memorial that commemorates the brave souls who sacrificed their lives in India’s various wars since 1947. Adjacent to the memorial is a local market where visitors can buy purses, bags, and other decorative items.
  • Ghoom Monastery - Just below Ghoom railway station, about 8 km away from Darjeeling town, Yiga Choling is the largest of Darjeeling’s “Three Monasteries.” Built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, it contains images of Buddhist deities and lamas, such as Chen Rezig, the Buddhist of compassion, and Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa Sect. The monastery also contains a huge 15-foot image of Jampeyang, the Buddha of the future. A large collection of liturgical texts includes the 108-volume Kangyur, the Tibetan Buddhist canon.
  • Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park - Darjeeling Zoo is famous for the rare Red Pandas, where one can see them in their natural habitat. It also houses diverse rare species like Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Siberian Tiger, and Black Bear, which one may not be able to see together in one place.
  • Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway - The Cable Car starts from Singamari to the valley of Tukvar Tea Estate.
  • Gombu Rock - The rock is named after Tenzing Norgay, one of the first climbers of Mt. Everest. One can try to climb the rock to test their strength and feel the excitement of adrenaline. If not, one can witness various climbers trying their luck in conquering the rock.
  • Tea Garden - Among the various tea plantations present in and around Darjeeling, the most famous are Happy Valley and Chitrey Tea Garden. Chitrey Tea Garden specializes in a variety of tea bushes. One can see the entire range of Mount Kanchenjunga while sitting among the tea bushes and sipping the famous Darjeeling Tea.
  • Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum, NBU - It is located on the premises of the Zoological Park and houses many different species of beetles, snakes, birds, animals, etc.
  • Japanese Peace Pagoda - The Japanese Peace Pagoda was established by followers of the Nipponzan Myohoji, a Japanese Buddhist order. The pagoda is the highest free-standing structure in town and showcases the avatars of Buddha. Near the pagoda is the Nipponzan Myohoji Temple, which is built in a traditional Japanese style and offers visitors a place for peace and introspection. Visitors may meditate and interact with the resident Japanese monks, and photography is permitted in the temple.
  • Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre - The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre (TRSHC), located in Lebong and locally known as Hermitage, was founded on October 2, 1959. Zhu Dan established this center in 1959 with funds raised through local charity (wife of Gyalo Thondup). Initially, the facility provided emergency relief to Tibetan refugees who had made the perilous journey across the Himalayas into India. For Tibetans, the hillside held special significance because the Thirteenth Dalai Lama had spent his exile in India from 1910 to 1912, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet at the time. The center was established as a charitable organization under the Indian government’s act. The center began with just four employees and now houses 130 Tibetan families. The center has been involved in a variety of activities, including handicrafts, artisan training, and craftsmen.
  • Himalayan Mountaineering Institute - In addition to being one of the world’s top mountaineering colleges, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute has drawn a lot of tourists because of its gorgeous location in Darjeeling, a hill station. This institute offers a truly captivating perspective of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world, rising to a height of 8586 meters. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute museum welcomes up to 500,000 visitors annually who come to view the displays that honor the art, culture, and advancements in the climbing sport. A Panorama of Himalayan Life, Mount Everest Expedition, and Mountaineering History comprise the three divisions of the museum. With the stunning Kanchenjunga in the background, it is perched atop a small pedestal in the center of the institute.

An enjoyable day trip in Darjeeling - We were picked up from our hotel by our guide cum driver. Anuj at 8:40 AM in His Toyota Inova. He first took us to the Japanese Peace Pagoda = from where we got an enchanting view of the snow-clad golden peak of Kanchanjunga. Next we were driven to the incredible Batasia Loop . After that er visited a tea garden on the slope of a mountain, where we bought some second-flush tea leaves, and ate some delicious Momos cooked and sold by a local vendor just outside the tea garden. Finally, we visited the Zoo garden and the adjoining Mountaineering Institute. This zoo had some special animals on display - such as, a white leopard ,a black leopard, a royal Bengal tiger, two red pandas and a number of exotic birds from far-away places. On the overall, I will rate the service of our guide-cum-driver Anuj as excellent and I will have no hesitation in recommending this tourist service from Green Escape Tour in Darjeeling.

Nice and memorable Darjeeling one-day tour! - Many nice stops during this trip were memorable and pleasant. Starting with the sunrise on Tiger Hill and the view of Mt. Kanchenchunga was spectacular, the Ghum Monastery and the Batasia Loop also within the view of Mt. Kanchenchunga. We had a nice break in the morning for an hour, back to our homestay for breakfast. Then the tour continued on to the others destinations like the Himalayan Zoo and Museum, Tea Garden, Gangamaya Park, etc.. We missed the Japanese Peace Pagoda, which was closed on Wednesdays. It was not a guided tour, we visited the places on our own and met the driver at a designated spot after our visit. We were not well-informed about the tour driver, and it took us quite some calls/texts with Mr. Abhishek to work out the initial pickup time. Our driver was Vivek, Amos's brother, who was also a skillful driver and pleasant. We had a wonderful time seeing Darjeeling and highly recommend Green Escape Tours for Darjeeling day trip.

Day trip sightseeing for Darjeeling locations - The trip included visits to the Tiger Hill for sunrise watching and possibly seeing Kanchenchunga, Ghum monastery, Himalayan Zoo, Happy Valley Tea. The highlights of the trip was Tiger Hill and the zoo. The sunrise was beautiful, however it was hard to see with many people there. The zoo had some beautiful animals there including a Bengal Tiger, Leopard and Red Pandas. The trip communication before the day of the tour was slow. The organizer only communicated via messages. The final tour itinerary was not set up until 6 pm the day before. Including a delayed start time. I would have preferred a conversation with the organizer a few days before to know what to expect and let him know what I really wanted to see. The tour is not a guided one. The driver dropped us off at the sites. Beyond that we were on our own. A guided tour would have been better. Certainly the Tiger Hill experience would have been better with someone showing where to stand to get the best views. The driver was very curteous. The trip could have taken us to a few other sights that we chose not to go to. The Happy Valley Tea estate visit was OK. The walk up and down to see the estate required walking up and down several deep uneven steps. Not good for people with weak knees.
