Highlights
  • Yungang Grottoes - Your Da Tong adventure begins with morning pickup from central Beijing hotels at 7:00am. Your guide will bring the pre-booked train tickets for you, and you’ll board a Wi-Fi-equipped car to Beijing North Railway Station. Catch the early train G2531 (8:20-10:06) to Da Tong. Upon arrival, your first stop is Yun Gang cave, the region’s most famous natural landmark. DaTong Yun Gang Grottoes has a 1500-year-old history from the Bei Wei period (460-526). You’ll see a one-kilometer-long stretch of 252 carved caves with 51,000 Buddha statues, ranging from 17 meters high to just a few centimeters. The most famous is the 20th cave, “Big Open Buddha,” which is exposed outside and has become the landmark of Da Tong. Yun Gang Grottoes are a treasure of ancient Chinese carving art, so don’t miss it.
  • Huayan Temple of Datong - Next, visit the amazing Hua Yan Temple, where you’ll see the largest and purest copper underground palace in China. Built in 1038 AD, it covers an area of 66,000 square meters and is an ancient, well-preserved architectural complex of Liao and Jin temples. The nearly 500 square meters at the tower’s base are made of 100 tons of pure copper. You’ll see various copper craftsmanship techniques such as carving, forging, soldering, and line carving, including caisson, tower columns, murals, floors, and escalators. See the Thousand Buddhas Underground Palace, the four main Buddhas, 448 small sacrificial Buddhas, and over 1,000 relief Buddha statues on the walls and towers. In the center of the underground palace, admire a crystal pagoda offering the relics of Buddhist monks.
  • Xuankong Si - After a simple famous shaved noodle lunch, continue to explore the amazing Hanging Temple, 70 kilometers from Yun Gang cave. Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it was listed as one of the top ten dangerous buildings in the world by American Time magazine, attracting many foreign explorers. It covers only 150 square meters, but the usable area is ten times more, standing 60-90 meters high on a cliff above the ground. Hanging Temple is a Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism temple, dating back 1500 years. It’s amazing for its half-cave, half-wooden frame structure, like a paper cutting stuck on the cliff. Take this breathtaking and thrilling trip when you are in Beijing, accompanied by a guide who provides informative commentary on what makes the tour so special.
At the end of the day, accompanied by your guide, you will take the train G2542 (19:08-20:53) back to Beijing. Your Beijing driver will transfer you back to your Beijing city hotel.

Incredible DaTong with Cathy - The booking experience was quick and easy. We received all the information we needed for a perfect experience. Cathy and our driver picked us up on time taking us directly to the Beijing North train station with delicious local dishes for breakfast. Our day in DaTong was perfect. We visited the Yun Gang Grottoes, Hanging Temple, and Hua Yan Temple with lots of time at each to fully experience each location. We had time to view the city wall and the amazing architecture of the old town including the Dragon Wall. Cathy provided an incredible amount of history about the area, the Dynasty’s, Buddhism, each location. The quality of the vehicles and drivers were great. We finished our day sharing a delicious dinner before heading back to the train station for our ride to Beijing and our hotel. An awesome day! Highly recommend.
