Embracing the Rain: A Cultural Dive into Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia
As the rain gently taps on the windows of your cozy retreat in Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, the city invites you to explore its rich cultural tapestry. The weekend promises a blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy, perfect for those who seek to immerse themselves in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Western Province.
Start your journey with the Sigiriya and Dambulla Tour, a private day tour that takes you deep into the annals of Sri Lankan history. Departing at 6:00 AM, this tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Cave Temple, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. As you wander through these ancient marvels, the rain adds a mystical aura to the surroundings, enhancing the experience of discovering the intricate frescoes and the grandeur of the rock fortress. The tour also includes a village excursion, where you can witness traditional Sri Lankan life, complete with a catamaran ride and a cooking demonstration. A recent review from March 2020 captures the essence of this experience:
“Best day ever - Had two trips booked with Henry. One Sigiriya rock and one safari to see elephants. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus, the government closed wildlife parks, which was disappointing. Henry was quick to email the info and refund our fee. As arranged, we were picked up at 6 AM by Henry to go to Sigiriya rock. On the way, we stopped at Dambulla caves, and Henry organized a guide to explain the cave history, which was very informative. Then traveled to Sigiriya rock. Again, Henry organized a guide and helpers, which at first we thought we wouldn’t need, but in the intense heat, they were a blessing assisting us up the steps. Normally, the guide said there would be 7000 people per day there, but we were two of only a dozen, so it felt like we had the place to ourselves, which in a way is sad for the effect on local people. The rock is well worth the climb when you get to the top, and guides are very good. Met up with Henry again, and we told him about our disappointment at not seeing elephants. As a result, Henry went out of his way not only to find elephants but to have an interaction. He found a spot near the road where an elephant and his mahout were bathing in the river. The mahout invited us to jump in and bathe the elephant. We spent 40 minutes allowing the elephant to shower us while we groomed him in the water. Utterly fantastic. We then drove 10 minutes, and Henry stopped the car again, got out a pair of binoculars, and pointed us to a wild herd of elephants 500 yards from the road. Totally amazing experience, one we will never forget. Best day ever, all thanks to Henry. Totally trustworthy, reliable, genuine nice guy. 100% recommend to anyone.” (Reviewed at: 2020-03-17)
A Day in Colombo: History and Modernity Intertwined
On the second day, as the rain continues to dance on the rooftops, delve into the vibrant city of Colombo with the Colombo City Tour. Starting at 10:00 AM, this full-day tour is a perfect blend of cultural exploration and modern indulgence. Your private guide will lead you through the bustling streets and serene parks, offering insights into the city’s rich history and diverse culture.
Visit the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, where the rain-soaked grounds add a serene beauty to the spiritual ambiance. The tour also includes a stop at the Dehiwala Zoological Garden, where you can witness the dedication to animal conservation amidst the lush, rain-kissed greenery. As you explore the city, the rain becomes a gentle companion, enhancing the vibrant colors of the Pettah Market and the artistic expressions at Wall ART Street.
A recent review from October 2024 highlights the tour’s excellence:
“Delightful Day Touring Colombo - Delightful day touring Colombo. Shirfan was a perfect guide and a very pleasant and patient person. Without hesitation, I recommend his tour.” (Reviewed at: 2024-10-10)
