Bukit Lawang is home to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, located within Gunung Leuser Park, one of the world’s largest national parks, spanning over 800,000 hectares of untouched rainforest.
Upon arrival in Bukit Lawang, a professional local guide will greet you to begin a 3-hour jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park, where you can observe the diverse wildlife. The trek involves navigating through the jungle, with steep slopes and dense vegetation adding to the thrill of the rainforest experience. In this tropical primary rainforest, you may encounter orangutans, siamang (long-armed apes), Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, gibbons, various reptiles, and a variety of birds. After the jungle trek, you will return to Medan and be dropped off at your hotel, concluding the day tour.

A day’s expedition into this region includes venturing out on a jungle trek within the Gunung Leuser National Park. The journey begins in Medan, assuming your accommodation is already in the city. Expect a drive lasting between 3 to 3.5 hours to reach Bukit Lawang. Upon arrival at Bukit Lawang and following lunch, embark on a brief but exhilarating 3-hour trek through the jungle, offering chances to encounter semi-wild or fully wild Orangutans. The challenging terrain, with its steep inclines and lush undergrowth, presents the sheer thrill of exploring the Sumatran rainforest, while also allowing you to witness a variety of native plant and animal species.
