Setting Sail on a Fijian Adventure

The moment I stepped onto the boat at Port Denarau, I knew I was in for a treat. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a golden hue over the marina, and the air was filled with the promise of adventure. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the ocean, but there’s something uniquely thrilling about setting sail in a new part of the world. The boat was intimate, with only about 20 of us onboard, which made the experience feel personal and exclusive. The crew was welcoming and even managed to accommodate a last-minute change for a friend who had booked the wrong day. Their hospitality set the tone for the day.

Our first stop was the Mana sand island, a place that seemed to leap straight out of a postcard. The water was a shade of blue I had never seen before, even in my Caribbean home. Our journey continued to Monuriki Island, famously known as the filming location for “Cast Away.” Walking through the island’s lush forest, I couldn’t help but imagine Tom Hanks’ character navigating this very terrain. The island was uninhabited, offering a sense of solitude and wonder. We enjoyed a traditional Fijian Lovo lunch, a feast cooked in an earth oven, which was a delightful taste of local culture. While the food was good, it was the experience of dining on such a storied island that truly captivated me.

A Perfect Ending

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to the boat, the sun beginning its descent. The sky was a canvas of colors, and as if on cue, a perfect circle rainbow appeared ahead of us, a fitting end to a day filled with natural beauty. The afternoon rains gently nudged us back to shore, but not before we had one last chance to jump off the boat’s roof into the ocean—a final thrill to cap off an unforgettable day.
