Below the eroding surface of Cappadocia, a hidden wonder of immense scale remained undiscovered for many years; an underground metropolis with the capacity to shelter as many as 20,000 residents for prolonged periods. The old city of Elengubu, now recognized as Derinkuyu, extends over 85m beneath the Earth’s crust, with 18 tiers of passageways. As the biggest unearthed subterranean city globally, it was continually inhabited for millennia, being passed down from the Phrygians, to the Persians, and then to Byzantine Era Christians. It was lastly deserted in the 1920s by the Cappadocian Greeks who fled hastily in large numbers to Greece following their loss in the Greco-Turkish war. The vast expanse of its cave-like rooms runs for hundreds of miles, and it’s believed that the over 200 distinct subterranean cities uncovered in the region could be linked to these tunnels, forming a colossal underground system.
