Life on a Plantation - I thought this tour was excellent. We got a very interesting and well rounded view of the different generations and life on a plantation. Anecdotes on the families and the workings of such huge properties was eye opening. The house and outbuildings have been restored beautifully and we were able to see original brick and timber from the 1700’s as well as how the house evolved through the various owners. The personal stories of some of the slaves recalled a horribly sad and factual account of that time in our history. Our guide was a charming and informed Southern lady who sounded just like Dolly Parton ! We would recommend!

Both sides of the Story - The mansion has that wow factor and so did our guide, Beverly. She made the people come alive and shared her enthusiasm for the structure, decoration, and history that the house represents. If you are lucky, you can meet Ann and learn the truths about the 1811 slave revolt from someone who knows. This historic site was rescued by a group of people and is owned and operated as a non-profit. What a gift!

Historical truths - Alan was the most amazing tour guide! So much knowledge and was able to answer all of our questions. He made you feel welcomed and our whole family learned so much! Such an appreciation for what people had to endure and the way the plantation changed over the years to be profitable without abuse and slave labor! I will go back! It takes several hours if you want to take it all in! You will learn what history doesn’t teach!

What an amazing experience! - Our tour guide Beverly was very informative and gave a very impressive presentation about the history and culture of the plantation and the surrounding area. Ann was also extremely knowledgeable and presented to us the story of the 1811 slave revolt. They both answered with great detail every question we had. What a great asset Beverly and Ann are to the River Road Historical Society.
