Corktown Community holds the title as the longest-standing district in Detroit. This neighbourhood has been a residence to the Detroit workforce since the 1830s. Unfortunately, an extensive 75-acres of houses and establishments in Corktown were cleared during the years after the Second World War for the sake of industrial and freeway growth. The remaining parts that housed residents were recorded in the National Register of Historic Places in July 1978. Thus, the district is now officially recognized as a Historic District of Detroit City.
