Harar - Day 1: Addis - Dire Dawa - Harar

Fly from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa for a 2-day tour of Harar. Our representatives will meet you at the airport, holding a sign with your name. Drive to Harar and check into your hotel. After some rest, embark on a city tour of Harar.

During the Harar city tour, stroll through the narrow alleyways, passing by colorful houses, and visit the Sheriff Museum (formerly Ras Teferi’s honeymoon house), Rimbaud House, and the Harari National Cultural Center. Explore Harari’s vibrant houses and local market.

One of the highlights of Harar is witnessing the hyena man, who tames wild hyenas. He feeds meat to the hyenas every night, sometimes holding the meat in his mouth for the hyenas to grab. You will also see the black kite bird feeding and the tomb of Amir Nur Mujahid.

Harar - The daily hyena feeding ritual demonstrates the deep bond between the people of Harar and these powerful animals. Local men, known as hyena feeders, gather at a designated spot outside the city walls, offering meat to the hyenas.

Harar - In the morning, drive from Harar to the Babile Camel Market and the Valley of Marvels. Babile hosts the largest camel market in the region every Monday and Thursday.

Somali and Oromo farmers come to Babile to sell their camels, goats, and cattle. Continue to the Valley of Marvels, known for its stunning landscapes and balancing rock formations. It’s fascinating to see large stones balanced on the tip of a single rock.

If it’s not a market day and Babile isn’t worth visiting, stop by Koremi on your way back to Dire Dawa. Koremi is an older village than Harar, with stone houses showcasing ancient architecture.

The people of Koremi cultivate a mild narcotic plant called chat and coffee. Drive back to Dire Dawa airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Harar - Harar is arguably the best city in Ethiopia for photography. Its photogenic nature, combined with a mix of culture, people, and colors, offers excellent subjects. Harar is an ancient trade center renowned in Ethiopia for its hospitable culture towards newcomers. Thousands of people reside within just 1 square kilometer.

To protect the city and its inhabitants from constant threats by neighboring tribes and kings, Emir Nur constructed a defensive wall called Jegol in the 1560s. The old city is still encircled by this wall, while a new section has expanded outside of it. The old city has five gates for entry, featuring narrow streets lined with colorful houses, numerous mosques, and shrines.

People from Harar are known for being simple, loving, and welcoming. They are reputed for making friends easily, a trait that even extends to the hyenas in Harar. Despite being formidable predators in Africa, hyenas are fed and coexist peacefully with the people.
