Monastery of Hosios Loukas - Begin your adventure with our professional driver picking you up. Travel through Thebes and the stunning slopes of Mount Parnassus to visit a Byzantine Monastery founded in the 10th century AD by monk Loukas. Marvel at the exquisite frescoes. This Monastery is a significant monument of Middle Byzantine art and architecture and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Arachova - Our next stop is the traditional village of Arachova, known for its many local craft shops where you can sample the famous local formaela sheep cheese.
Delphi - The following stop is the Delphi archaeological site, our second UNESCO site on this tour. Upon arrival at the mystical site of Delphi, you will walk the ‘Sacred Way’ uphill to explore all the Temples and Sites. Some of the notable sites include:
The Temple of Apollo
The Theatre
The Stadium
The sanctuary of Athena Pronaia with the Tholos and the Kastalia spring.
Delphi Archaeological Museum - Located at the foot of the main archaeological complex, on the east side of the village and north of the main road, the Delphi Archaeological Museum houses an impressive collection related to ancient Delphi. Highlights include the earliest known notation of a melody, the famous Charioteer of Delphi, Kleobis and Biton, golden treasures found beneath the Sacred Way, the Sphinx of Naxos, and fragments of reliefs from the Siphnian Treasury. Near the exit, you will find the inscription mentioning the Roman proconsul Gallio.
Kalambaka - We then head to Kalambaka and the Meteora Rocks, approximately 230 kilometers from Delphi. The journey takes you through picturesque villages and towns of central Greece, each with its unique beauty. Upon arrival, you will enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants or taverns.
You will spend the night at accommodations such as Iridanos Guesthouse.
Meteora, Thermopylae, Kamena Vourla
Meteora - The next morning, after breakfast, we will ascend the rocks to visit the Meteora monasteries.
This is a relaxed tour, allowing ample time for photos, leisurely walks, and enjoyment at your own pace. Your driver will handle all arrangements and provide live commentary throughout the trip.
There are six monasteries at Meteora: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, Agios Stefanos, Holy Trinity, and St. Nikolaos. Depending on the day and time, you will visit 2 or 3 of these monasteries.
Dating back to the 14th century, the Meteora monasteries are unique worldwide for their remarkable collection of Byzantine and Christian artifacts, including traditional monk attire, elegant paintings, and etched glass. In 1981, the James Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’ was partially filmed at the Monastery of Holy Trinity. The dramatic rocks of Meteora also appear in the background during a scene with Tyrion from ‘Game of Thrones’ hanging at the edge of a cliff.
Battlefield of Thermopylae - The Battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Achaemenid Empire of Xerxes I over three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It coincided with the naval battle at Artemisium in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae (“The Hot Gates”). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which ended with the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. By 480 BC, Xerxes had amassed a massive army to conquer all of Greece. Both ancient and modern writers have cited the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of a patriotic army defending its homeland. The defenders’ performance is also seen as a testament to the advantages of training, equipment, and strategic use of terrain, symbolizing courage against overwhelming odds.
Kamena Vourla - Our final stop is the seaside village of Kamena Vourla, where we will treat you to an afternoon coffee or tea with a sea view.
Filled with beautiful and memorable experiences, we then head back to Athens.
