Devil’s Dyke National Trust - This 300-foot-deep valley was formed by vast amounts of water flowing off the Downs during the last Ice Age. As the snow melted, the frozen chalk prevented absorption, and erosion was furthered by the freeze-thaw cycle, deepening the valley through the movement of saturated chalk.
The Devil’s Dyke V-shaped dry valley is a result of solifluction and river erosion. Over 14,000 years ago, the area experienced a very cold climate (though not glacial). Snowfields covered the South Downs, and permafrost conditions kept the chalk permanently frozen. In summer, melting snowfields saturated the topsoil, as water could not penetrate the frozen chalk beneath. Waterlogged material above the permafrost slid down the slope, removing material through friction and revealing deeper layers of frozen chalk. - Royal Oak Pub Poynings - A charming country pub located at the base of the South Downs and Devil’s Dyke. This is an optional stop for guests who wish to make an additional visit.
