Donauwörth settled at the confluence of the rivers Danube and Wörnitz, and it’s part of the romantic route called Romantische Straße. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Donauwörth grew up under the protection of the castle of Mangoldstein and became a seat of Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 13th century. The city had an old Danube port since the 16th century, which later developed into the endpoint of Danube steam navigation.
