Highlights
  • Shichahai Scenic Resort - Start your culinary journey at Shichahai metro station, where you’ll meet your English-speaking guide ready to take you on a food adventure. Stroll through 1.5 miles (2.5km) of Beijing’s historic hutong alleyways, absorbing the city’s history while enjoying delicious local snacks along the way.
  • Drum Tower (Gulou) Park - This hidden treasure offers rooftop views of Beijing’s historic bell tower and serves local hotpot in traditional copper pots filled with a clear broth that showcases the quality ingredients. Thin slices of mutton and beef are quickly cooked in the pot and then dipped in a sauce made with sesame paste…plus enjoy a pint of local craft beer!
  • Nanluoguxiang - Operated by a husband-wife duo, this hidden restaurant specializes in spring pancakes, a dish traditionally enjoyed with family during Chinese New Year to celebrate the arrival of spring and a good harvest. Made fresh to order, they are eaten like a burrito and symbolize family reunion and togetherness.
  • Mao’er Hutong No.45 Parking Lot - When Beijingers crave noodles, there’s only one dish that comes to mind. In fact, we literally call it “Beijing Noodles” because all other noodle dishes are considered inferior. Visit the Yan family’s 100+ year old home, nestled deep inside a hutong courtyard, to try their made-from-scratch secret recipe.

Buns, Bao and Beer - Walking through the bussle of Hutong whilst our guide swept us between restaurants, both large roof top terraces to small courtyards as we tried local food was excellent. though I had Peking Duck previously, the meat buns of Beijing really shined through as a dish I will have to find or make at home.

The local restaurants really were hidden gems that were off the beaten path.
