Discovering Dongcheng’s Hidden Treasures
Dongcheng, a district that seamlessly blends the ancient with the modern, offers a unique tapestry of experiences waiting to be unraveled. As you step into this vibrant part of Beijing, the weather greets you with warm, sunny days, perfect for exploration. On January 11th, the temperature ranges from a comfortable 25.2°C to a warm 34.6°C, with clear skies and low humidity, making it an ideal day to wander through the historic alleys of the Hutongs.
Begin your journey with the Hutong Tour, available from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This exclusive, customizable experience is perfect for first-time visitors. As you stroll through the narrow lanes, you’ll encounter the rich history and culture that define this area. From the charming antique stores on Liulichang Street to the bustling Qianmen Main Street Mall, each corner tells a story of its own. The tour also includes a visit to the Bell and Drum Towers, where you can witness the traditional drum performances if the tower is open. A review from November 18, 2023, highlights the exceptional service of the guide, who not only shares insightful stories but also captures memorable moments for you.
“Exceptional Tour Guide! Hutong Breakfast is a must-have in your itinerary! Although I loved my hotel breakfast, I was thrilled to try the local’s breakfast. Sunflower, our enthusiastic guide, brought us to a few popular shops to try the zhajiangmian (noodles with fried bean sauce), steamed meat bun, Chinese chopstick donuts, rolling donkey (sticky rice dough with red-bean paste coated in soybean powder, no donkey meat), wonton (dumpling), Chinese crepe and soy milk. The food was simple and tasty but my favourite was the zhajiangmian and wonton. Pleasantly savoury and fragrant, yum! We also got to see the locals exercising and playing jianzi (featherball kicking). My mother and I enjoyed the Breakfast Tour very much and Sunflower’s exceptional service (she took all our photos for us!). She is light-hearted, intuitive and accommodating whom you will love at first sight. 5-stars for Sunflower!” - Reviewed at 2023-11-18

Begin your evening at the Pearl Market, where your personal shopping guru will guide you through a maze of stalls offering everything from pearls to electronics. The art of bartering is an experience in itself, and with expert tips, you’ll find the perfect souvenirs to take home.
After shopping, indulge in a traditional Peking Duck dinner at a local restaurant. This iconic dish, known for its crispy skin and succulent meat, is a must-try when in Beijing. The meal is a culinary journey, with the duck prepared in three distinct styles, each offering a unique taste experience. As you savor each bite, you’ll appreciate the rich flavors that have been perfected over centuries.
The evening culminates with a mesmerizing acrobatic show at the Red Theatre. From 4:20 PM to 5:10 PM, witness the breathtaking performances that showcase the agility and artistry of Beijing’s finest acrobats. A review from April 3, 2019, captures the essence of this unforgettable experience:
“Market Mania, Delicious Duck and KungFu Kings - Getting a great tour guide can be a lottery but we struck it lucky with Beccy. Her warm and friendly personality combined with fantastic English put the whole family instantly at ease. The tour was great - from the crazy bartering experience of the Pearl Market (where Beccy taught us a great Chinese phrase to keep insistent stall holders at bay) through to a delicious duck dinner (where Beccy explained how to eat each of the dishes) to the grand finale of the KungFu show which had my 12 and 11 year old boys totally transfixed. Really worth doing and my big tip is insist on getting Beccy as your guide.” - Reviewed at 2019-04-03
