- Parte Vieja - Txikiteo: The first rule of the txikiteo club is that there are no rules. A rough definition of ‘txikiteo’ might be: moving from bar to bar, enjoying a pintxo and sipping a glass of something (typically a low-alcohol drink, not cocktails!) at each stop. Parte Vieja - Txikiteo: The first rule of the txikiteo club is that there are no rules. A rough definition of ‘txikiteo’ might be: moving from bar to bar, enjoying a pintxo and sipping a glass of something (typically a low-alcohol drink, not cocktails!) at each stop. The txikiteo is experienced standing, in front of a bar brimming with pintxos, surrounded by strangers (who might become acquaintances).
With Ikusnahi, you’ll engage in pure txikiteo, hopping from bar to bar, savoring each establishment’s renowned specialty in an authentic Basque setting, mingling with locals who, at first, are strangers…but could become friends. - Fermin Calbeton Kalea - Pintxo: A piece of miniature cuisine that began as something simple (like a slice of potato omelette or ham on bread) and has been refined by Basque Country bars over time to attract more patrons. The history is fascinating, with as many versions as there are historians. On this tour, you’ll discover some of these stories, along with many other intriguing facts about the Basque Country’s culinary culture.
Drinking: This is another major tradition (alongside Eating) in the Basque Country. Wine and cider have been favored by the Basque people for centuries, although beer has gained popularity in recent years. Did you know that in the 16th century, Basque sailors rarely suffered from scurvy on long sea voyages, thanks to the cider they consumed?
- Sarriegi Plaza - Txakoli: A typically Basque dry and sparkling white wine, with grapes grown in vineyards near the Cantabrian Sea. It’s perfect for pairing with fish dishes…or pintxos. Nothing more to add.
Cider: A low-alcohol drink made from fermented apple juice. Slightly sweet and slightly bitter, it has only one danger: it goes down as easily as water.
Zurito: A small beer (about 20-25 cl.) perfect for accompanying pintxos. The term ‘zurito’ is unique to the Basque Country. If you ask for a ‘zurito’ in Madrid, no one will understand you (unless the bartender is Basque, of course).
- Calle 31 de Agosto - San Sebastián Cheesecake: If God were a cake, He would be a San Sebastián Cheesecake. Did you know that San Sebastián Cheesecake is considered global cheesecake royalty, alongside New York Cheesecake? Did you know that, due to its success, the Thermomix kitchen robot includes the ‘San Sebastián Cheesecake’ recipe in its programs? Today, you’ll taste the original, the source, the Big Bang of cheesecakes.
