Additional Information

Unearthed in 1952, the Cave is nestled 200ft (70 m) beneath the Burren limestone terrain. Donning a safety helmet and guided by a skilled and well-versed guide, you’ll navigate a complex network of tunnels and trails, gaining knowledge about the formation of the Cave. This is an awe-striking experience, and you can’t help but feel the thrill and fascination that the Cave’s initial explorers and adventurers must have felt years ago.

As your descent comes to an end, brace yourself for a fleeting moment of mysterious tranquility, absolute darkness and utter silence, abruptly replaced by a blaze of light illuminating the grand, cathedral-like dome of the Cave. The continent’s largest stalactite, a monument of nature, is the focal point: a colossal feature descending from the Cave’s ceiling, refracting light, colors and details like a gigantic, ornate glass chandelier. This mesmerizing spectacle spans 7.3 meters and weighs roughly 10 tonnes. A truly unforgettable spectacle.

  • There are 125 steps down and up from the cave. Every ten steps there is a landing and a handrail all the way.
  • The temperature in the cave remains a constant 11°C (52°F) so it appears cool in summer and warm in the winter. A light jacket or warm sweater will keep you cosy for the tour.
  • A sturdy pair of walking boots or shoes are advisable. Open-toed footwear is not suitable for the cave tour as it is slightly muddy and uneven terrain underfoot.

Don’t miss this experience - Great experience with a great guide. Cian explained the science and kept our attention for the entire visit. It’s incredible and a tiny bit scary to be so far underground and to see nature at its most inspiring. Well worth a visit

Wonderful Tour - Four of us went on the last tour of the day down AND up 126 steps. The surprise at the bottom is worth the trek. The guide was very good but wear waterproof footwear as it was wet.

A welcomed surprise - Funny story to start with. My son and I watched the Amazing Race Season 35 and they went into a cave. About 3 weeks late he came to me and said he found the cave they went in and it is right near the Cliffs of Moher can we go. So I booked the experience way ahead of time. When we go to the parking lot it looked nothing like what I thought it would and come to find out it was not the cave they went in. I am glad I didn't do any research ahead of time because I was completely blown away at the reveal when we reached our destination. To get there, you put on 'construction' helmet which are definitely needed because even as a not so tall person my head hit the top of the tunnel a few times. You do go down about 125 steps. Once we got to the reveal area, our vey well informed tour guide had turned off the lights so we could not see and then shined her torch lamp on the amazing Stalactite hanging from the middle of this deep cavern. To think these two 18 year old boys discovered this just because they were looking for something to do and didn't let a challenge stop them is just remarkable. This was definitely a highlight of our vacation to Ireland.

Doolins little gem - Booked tour night before, on arrival couldn't download qr code but was given tkts anyway only to hand them in about 30 secs later to tour guide- but that was only issue and a bug bear of mine these days when booking anything online! Cian was great guide, informative but with humour and covered all health and safety issues especially the 125 steps down then back up however there are stools on the little landings if required. Fascinating story of how the stalactite was discovered. Great effect when Cian turned all lights off for few seconds then shone torch onto the stalactite to show how the 2 guys would have first seen it! Nice little gift shop and cafe at the end!

Pleasant surprise! - This was a surprisingly fascinating tour. Kim, our guide, was so well, informed and passionate about the history of the cave, the formation of stalactites and the geology of the area. It’s been a long time since I’ve been down a cave and my wife and I enjoyed the 40 minute experience. The initial steps are steep, the walk to the stalactite is done wearing helmets (it came in very handy) and the space is at times tight. It’s great exercise and such an interesting experience. We’d wholly recommend it.

Visit to do when you have time to waste - Very good, friendly guide. So yes, we see the largest stalactites in Europe, but apart from that, the cave is more than ordinary. Take more time at the Cliffs of Moher and move on

Expensive - Very expensive for a tour that lasts for 30 mins, with most of that basically going up and down stairs. Not worth the price
