Highlights
  • Jurassic Coast - The Jurassic Coast is a diverse landscape underpinned by incredible geology. 252 million years ago, this area of the Earth’s crust was stretching and sinking. As it sank, sediment piled on top of each other to form rocks. First in baking deserts during the Triassic Period and then in the Jurassic period, sea level rose and changed the desert into a tropical sea. A forest grew then died and was buried beneath the sediments of swamps and rivers. This was the start of the Cretaceous where earth movements tilted the rock layers to the east. The rocks pushed up in the west were eroded. The sea rose again and sandstone and Chalk were laid down across the region, burying older rock. Since that time erosion has carved this remarkable rock into the landscape we see today. There are opportunities here for many experiences, from summer beach days to soul-stirring walks in wind-swept winter. The landscape of the Jurassic Coast captures our imagination and invites us to find a sense of belonging.

Additional Information

The Jurassic Coast The name comes from the best known of the geological periods found within it. The Jurassic Coast stretches 96 miles (154 km). It is truly an outstanding place to explore Earth’s history. The evolution of life and the natural processes that shape our world. Fossils teach us about prehistoric life. Along the Jurassic Coast fossils help to show how life adapted and changed as 185 million years slowly passed. The Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods make up the Mesozoic Era, the age of giant reptiles and dinosaurs. The Jurassic is famous for its marine habitats and dinosaurs like Allosaurus and Stegosaurus. The cliffs around Lyme Regis constantly crumble and slip into the sea, revealing fossils from the ancient Jurassic past of 180 million years ago. Take a fossil hunting walk and discover the fossilised remains of giant ichthyosaur, plesiosaur, belemnites and ammonites that can be found on the beach. Do not forget to pack your swim suits.
