Howick Falls - From Durban we drive past Pietermaritzburg and our first stop is Howick Falls. The Howick Falls view from the top, in particular, is pretty inspiring, and the volley of water mesmerising. The waterfall is a 95 metre cascade into a broiling, restless pool, regarded by the local Zulus with grave superstition, and said to be the place of the spirits of ancestors.
Nelson Mandela Capture Site - From Howick Falls we proceed to Nelson Mandela Capture Site which is only a short distance from Howick Falls. Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside Howick, Natal, South Africa. He spent the next 27 years of his life in prison. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site commemorates this moment in history with a museum and a world renowned sculpture. We first visit the museum before proceeding to the world famous Nelson Mandela Monument which is within the same grounds for photographs etc…
Drakensberg Mountains - From the Nelson Mandela Capture Site we proceed to the Drakensberg Mountains. The Drakensberg region is extraordinary, thanks to the dramatically beautiful setting. This region is home to the awe-inspiring mountain range which is predominantly found in the KwaZulu Natal Province. The Drakensberg Mountain range is more than 200 kilometres long and combines rugged peaks with verdant valleys and spectacular backdrops. It creates a natural border between the kingdom of Lesotho and the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We enjoy the bush at the mountains where we encounter many different types of plants, flowers, insects, and a variety of other wildlife. On arrival in the Drakensberg, we take a brief tour of the area before we find our way to the hotel for the night.
We start day 2 with breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast we proceed to the Drakensberg Mountains for a hiking tour.
Drakensberg Region - The Drakensberg Mountains is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa with breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. Our hiking takes us into the mountains where we see a lot of the different types of trees, plants, rocks and even some of the ancient paintings by bushmen. Our hiking can be anything between 4km and 9km depending on one’s level of fitness.
After the hiking, we can proceed to the local restaurants for lunch (client expense) before taking on the journey back to Durban where we arrive late afternoon at around 6pm.
