Setting Sail with Captain Polo

The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to 40 Rue des Gommiers, the starting point of my latest adventure. I was greeted by Captain Polo, a local legend known for his deep knowledge of the mangroves and the surrounding waters. As we set sail, the gentle Caribbean breeze filled the sails, and I felt a familiar thrill of anticipation. The bay of Fort de France, with its UNESCO-listed beauty, stretched out before us, promising a day of discovery and wonder.

Captain Polo’s stories of the mangroves were as rich and vibrant as the ecosystem itself. We navigated through the dense network of roots and branches, spotting a variety of wildlife that called this unique habitat home. The tranquility of the mangroves was a stark contrast to the open sea, and I found myself lost in the serenity of the moment.

The Allure of Diamond Rock

Our journey continued south towards the iconic Diamond Rock, a towering sentinel rising from the sea. As a former professional surfer, I’ve seen my fair share of impressive rock formations, but Diamond Rock was something special. Its history, as recounted by Captain Polo, added layers of intrigue to its already captivating presence.

We circled the rock, taking in its rugged beauty from every angle. The water here was a mesmerizing shade of blue, inviting us to dive in and explore the coral beds below. I couldn’t resist the call of the ocean, and soon I was snorkeling among the vibrant coral, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colorful fish. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.

Swimming with Turtles in Anses d’Arlet

As we made our way back, we stopped at the beaches of Anses d’Arlet, a hidden gem that seemed untouched by time. The crystal-clear waters were perfect for swimming, and I eagerly jumped in, hoping to catch a glimpse of the turtles that frequent these shores.

Swimming alongside these gentle creatures was a humbling experience. Their graceful movements and serene presence were a testament to the beauty and fragility of marine life. As I floated in the warm Caribbean waters, I felt a deep sense of connection to the ocean and its inhabitants.

The day ended with a delightful snack of fresh local juice and a tasting of local products, a perfect way to savor the flavors of the island. As I made my way back to shore, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a breathtaking part of the world.
