Dunedin Railway Station - The Dunedin Railway Station is the second most photographed building in the southern hemisphere, only surpassed by the Sydney Opera House. We’ll enter the station’s foyer, adorned with Royal Doulton tiled walls and a mosaic floor made up of around half a million pieces. Although it’s currently under renovation and covered with scaffolding, a picture of the building has been printed on the exterior!
-
Toitu Otago Settlers Museum - As we pass Toitu, we’ll see Josephine, the first locomotive in Otago, and hear its story—how it arrived, was nearly lost to history, and ultimately survived.
-
Queens Garden - At Queens Gardens, we’ll hear the story of the first Scottish settlers, their warm welcome by the Kai Tahu Maori, their struggles with rain and mud, and why it was all worth it.
-
Princes Street - In the Exchange area, we’ll observe the winged monkeys of the Cargill memorial and other whimsical stone carvings.
-
Fable Dunedin - Here, we’ll admire a series of old banks from the gold rush era and Wain’s hotel, now called Fable, which features intriguing stone details.
-
Broadway Medical Centre Dunedin Ltd - Broadway now hosts a medical centre, but it was once the site of a large shopping center where Mr. and Mrs. Loft had a shoe shop and met a scandalous and tragic end.
-
Speight’s Brewery - We’ll conclude the tour here, where you can see more fascinating buildings in the area. Feel free to stay at Speight’s to enjoy a drink in the restaurant and gift shop, or we can loop back to the Octagon where we started.
