Day 1: Dunhuang Museum, Mogao Caves, Mingsha Shan - Echoing-Sand Mountain, Crescent Moon Pool
Dunhuang Museum - Meet your guide and driver in your hotel lobby and transfer to Dunhuang Museum. You will visit Dunhuang Museum (closed on Monday).
Mogao Caves - Then head to the Visitors’ Center of Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Begin your exciting tour at the Mogao Caves and Digital Film Center. Located in the Gobi desert, the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas feature stunning wall frescoes and over 3,000 sculptures dating from the fourth to the fourteenth century. A professional cave guide will lead you to explore about 7 to 9 caves closely.
Mingsha Shan - Echoing-Sand Mountain - After lunch, you will be driven to Mingsha Shan - Echoing-Sand Mountain. Ride camels and climb to the top of the dune. Along the way, enjoy splendid sights: golden sand, the rolling desert, a tranquil lake, and a beautiful sunset.
Crescent Moon Pool - You’ll also visit the Crescent Moon Pool. As its name suggests, the Crescent Pool is naturally shaped like a half-moon. According to historical records, the lake has existed for hundreds of years without ever being buried by sand. Your wonderful tour ends here, and your guide and driver will take you back to your hotel in Dunhuang.
Day 2: Yadan National Geological Park, Yumen Pass, Great Wall of Han Dynasty, Shazhou Nightly Market
Yadan National Geological Park - Meet your friendly private guide and driver at your hotel in the early morning. You will visit the geological phenomena of Yadan Park, created over time by erosion of the soft earth by rain and wind, leaving unusual rock formations. In the park, you can view uniquely-shaped rocks like Mongolian tent, Stone Bird, Peacock, and others. Use your imagination, and you may find some rocks resembling famous architectures, like the Potala Palace in Tibet or the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
Yumen Pass - Then head to Yumen Pass and the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty. Historically, the Han Dynasty built many walls to secure the frontier region and explore trade routes with the western region. During the Han dynasty, this pass was part of the Silk Road, connecting Central Asia and China. You will feel the history of Yumen Pass as a trading post.
Shazhou Nightly Market - This is the largest night market in the area. You will see many local small commodities, and it is a great place to experience the local food culture. Your wonderful tour ends here, and your guide and driver will take you back to your hotel in Dunhuang.
