- Berea - Pigeon Valley is a charming 10-hectare nature reserve located in the heart of Durban, named after the Eastern Bronze-naped (Delegorgue’s) Pigeon, first collected and documented here by Delegorgue in 1847. It is renowned as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s premier birdwatching spots. The reserve preserves a small remnant of the once-extensive Stella bush, which used to cover much of the Berea. The vegetation is characteristic of climax coastal lowland forest, featuring several remarkable tree species, particularly the rare Natal Elm, for which the reserve was initially established. Visitors can spot birds such as the Spotted Ground Thrush, Buff-spotted Flufftail, Green Malkoha, and Green Twinspot.
- Durban Botanic Gardens - The Durban National Botanical Gardens, covering over 50 hectares, is located at the base of Berea, between St Thomas and Sydenham Roads. Its park-like grounds host a diverse range of intriguing species from across South Africa and beyond. The gardens are celebrated for their tranquility and beauty, with large trees, lush grass, and vibrant flora in a rich forest setting. A small lake, surrounded by captivating vegetation like papyrus, ornamental bananas, and raffia palms, adds to the charm. Birdwatchers can look for species such as the Black Sparrowhawk, Pink-backed Pelican, Red-backed Mannikin, Red-capped Robin-chat, White-eared Barbet, and Purple-crested Turaco.
- Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve - Situated just north of Durban’s center, near the northern tip of Umhlanga Rocks, is the relatively untouched estuary of the Umhlanga River. A short trail provides an easy and pleasant walk through the preserved dune forest and across the lagoon. The path traverses a variety of habitats, with key bird species to observe including the Green Malkoha, Spotted Ground-thrush, Olive Woodpecker, and Crested Guineafowl.
