Highlights
  • Sani Pass - This is one of the most sought-after tours! The Sani Pass Lesotho 4x4 tour departs from Durban and makes a stop at Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. The guide will provide a brief tour of the city, including a visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Pietermaritzburg City Hall. The journey then continues towards the Drakensberg Mountains, ascending to the Sani Pass in Lesotho. A passport is required.

Please be aware that due to new Covid-19 regulations, a 15 to 20-minute PCR test will be conducted at the South African border. This test costs R250 per person, payable in cash.

  • Zulu Safaris - The Sani Pass is a 33km gravel road that winds along the steep cliffs of the Drakensberg escarpment with a series of sharp zigzag turns. The route starts at the Sani Pass Hotel, situated 1566m above sea level. You will travel in a Land Rover 4×4 along the narrow road, crossing the South African/Lesotho border post at 1968m above sea level. Along the way, the KwaZulu-Natal landscape unfolds, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills and expansive skies.

At the summit of Sani Pass, at an elevation of 3240 metres / 9900 feet, lies the “Highest Pub in Africa.” Here, you will have time to enjoy a warm pub meal at your own expense (subject to availability). Your tour guide will also take you to a nearby local home to meet the Basotho people in a local village, where you can observe their way of life. Afterward, you will descend Sani Pass, cross the border back into South Africa, and return to Durban.

An Incredibly Scenic Tour on Sani Pass from Durban - This tour is truly amazing, prepared to get WOWed by the beautiful and stunning scenery all along the way, from Underberg, up to Lesotho. It’s also a must-do activity in South Africa. And I will let my photos speak for itself for the beautiful scenery in this tour. Also, it is very convenient to start and end the tour in Durban, as I can easily find a flight with time suitable for me and have other activities before and after the tour in Durban as well. A special shoutout to the guide of the tour, Thami, for bringing me all the way to and from Duran and Lesotho. I have learned more about Lesotho as well as South Africa from him. He also got a very nice music playlists that matched this road trip in the countryside. I have enjoyed the tour very much!

If You are Staying in Durban, Do This! - Incredible experience! I booked it on a whim while staying in Durban looking for things to do and I do not regret it one bit. Pick up from the hotel was smooth and had a nice drive north with a man named Masolo (sp?) to the meeting point before heading out in the 4x4. My guide Grant was very friendly and gave a lot of extra details of the land from his personal experience growing up in the region. He handled all of the passports and documents to ensure an easy entry and exit from Lesotho. The drive up the pass was exciting, you really feel every twist and turn and it is simply amazing that humans were able to do it before the creation of the roads and 4x4 vehicles. The views from Sanni Pass were beautiful, and visiting the highest pub in Africa was a nice bonus! We drove all the way up the road despite the snow and ice. Had a great time in the village learning a little bit about the Basotho people's culture and getting a small taste of how they live.

Great tour - Great tour !!! I liked everything, the Drakenberg mountains, the village and the highest pub in Africa !!! On the downside, it seems the few villages behind the border get too much used to tourism and the highest pub in Africa doesn’t serve draught beer
