The journey of the Inanda Heritage Tour commences at the Inanda township, escorting guests to the Ohlange Institute. This institute was the creation of Rev. John Dube, the inaugural president of the African National Congress in 1901. This institute is also the historic location where Dr. Nelson Mandela, a past president, cast his voting ballot in 1994….
The journey of the Inanda Heritage Tour commences at the Inanda township, escorting guests to the Ohlange Institute. This institute was the creation of Rev. John Dube, the inaugural president of the African National Congress in 1901. This institute is also the historic location where Dr. Nelson Mandela, a past president, cast his voting ballot in 1994.
Included in the tour is a stop at the Phoenix Settlement, a community founded by Gandhi in 1904. The abode of Gandhi that still stands in this settlement has been thoroughly rehabilitated and declared a national monument.
The Inanda Seminary, one of the oldest private schools for African girls, founded in 1869 by the missionary Mary Edwards, is also on the itinerary. The seminary, which was recently fully renovated, is located near Ebuhleni village, the birthplace of the Shembe religion. Founded approximately a century back, the Shembe church in the village today boasts of an impressive following of over two million members.
