When invaders threatened to seize them as their courtesans, these mountain dwellers pleaded to Allah to morph them into silent pillars of stone. Another local tale suggests that the stones were formed after a bitter confrontation with Genghis Khan, where 40 brave female horse-riders held off the legendary conqueror, though eventually meeting their demise in battle.
