Additional Information

The Wakhan valley is situated in the south-west part of Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province and the north-east region of Afghanistan. It’s home to the source of the Amu Darya River and was once a key passageway for travellers from the Tarim Basin to Badakshan. In 1873, the United Kingdom and Russia agreed to divide the Wakhan, marking their respective spheres of influence at the Pyanj and Pamir rivers. The border was validated by a treaty between Britain and Afghanistan in 1893. Moreover, the Wakhan valley links to Tashkurgan Tajik County in China via a slender stretch known as the Wakhan Corridor, which buffers the Gorno-Badakhshan area of Tajikistan from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan regions of Pakistan. Owing to its strategic location where the western and eastern parts of Central Asia converge, the Wakhan valley has possessed immense historical significance.
