Highlights

Dushanbe-KalaiKhum

Qalaikhumb - Today, we will journey to the village of Kalai Khum. Along the way, you’ll witness the Norak water reservoir, often referred to as the Blue Sea. The highest point of our trip today is the Shurabad Pass at 2,200 meters. Following this, our drive will take us along the Afghanistan border. This segment will captivate you with its distinctive mountains, marking the beginning of the Pamir Mountains territory. Throughout history, the Pamirs have inspired some of the world’s most renowned explorers, including Marco Polo, Hsuan Tsang, and Mirza Muhammad Haidar. Now, you too have the opportunity to explore this region. We will drive along the natural border formed by the Pyanj River. Many travelers who have visited the Pamirs have described this vast mountain system as an ocean of white and blue peaks. Tonight, you’ll stay in a local home, giving you a glimpse into the daily life of the residents.

Osh - After breakfast, we set off for Karakul, a 135 km journey. We will traverse several high-altitude passes, including the Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655 meters, the highest road section in the former Soviet Union. We then descend to Karakul Lake and cross our final high pass on the Pamir Highway, the Kyzyl Art Pass at 4,282 meters, which essentially marks the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Karakul Lake, situated at 3,915 meters, is the highest lake in Central Asia and is too elevated to support aquatic life. The drive offers a stark contrast as we move from the barren high-altitude plateau of Tajikistan to the lush farmlands and small villages of Kyrgyzstan. Along the way, we cross the Taldyk Pass at 3,554 meters and enjoy stunning views. If we’re fortunate, we might even catch a glimpse of Peak Lenin, which at 7,134 meters is the second-highest mountain in Central Asia.

25 day trip around Tadjikistan - I had the privilege to enjoy a 25 day trip around Tadjikistan with Oriz from Explore Pamir as a guide. We visited the Fann mountains, drove through the Pamir and had several walks in this beautiful country. I travelled with quite a large group which doesn’t make a life’s guide easy but Oriz succeeded quite well! The wellbeing of the members of the group was very important to him. I appreciated his knowledge of the country and the way of life in the different regions. And, not to forget, I enjoyed his humour! We also had some very interesting discussions about the country, immigration and several other topics. He was certainly an added value for our trip!

trip to Tajikistan - I found Explore Pamir on Facebook. We enjoyed our trip with Oriz (Our Tajik Guide) in Tajikistan. Oriz has an innate ability to combine his local knowledge with good humour and an easy going attitude. This made our time in Tajikistan relaxed and fun. For example, procuring vodka and cognac whilst we were at the Iscandarkul lake was a very nice surprise. I think a small group tour is not only about the history, scenery and lifestyle of the country that you are visiting but most important are the people that you meet along the way. As well, Our driver was the best driver we had across all three countries as he was part of the group and was quick with a smile. As a guide/driver team they work well together.
