- My Son Sanctuary - The My Son sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dedicated to the worship of the god Shiva and built between the 4th and the 14th century AD by the kings of Champa. The site features many beautiful stone sculptures, temples and towers, surrounded by exotic tropical jungle. My Son was damaged during Vietnam’s tumultuous past and lay neglected for a long time. It was ‘rediscovered’ and renovated by the French in 1898, then used as a hiding place by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, when they mistakenly thought their American enemy would not bomb a holy site. Despite the destruction that ensued, the majority of the central complex managed to survive and parts have now been rebuilt.

The sanctuary of My Son, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was constructed between the 4th and 14th century AD by the Champa kings in honor of the deity Shiva. Amid an enchanting tropical jungle scenery, the heritage site showcases exquisite stone artworks, temples and towers. My Son had suffered from years of neglect and damage brought on by Vietnam’s turbulent history. Its restoration took place in 1898 by the French, after which it became a covert site for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, assuming incorrectly that the Americans would not attack such a holy place. Despite the ensuing devastation, a large portion of the core complex endured and some parts have now been reconstructed.
