The Cuckmere valley and estuary is an extraordinary and picturesque region in Sussex, England, at the point where the Cuckmere river meets the English Channel. The valley boasts a rich mix of wildlife and history, offering several attractions to discover and appreciate.
The valley’s defining attribute is the curving river that creates a series of loops and kinks on its journey to the sea. Both nature and human influence have sculpted the river over many centuries. Formerly a tidal salt marsh, the valley was drained and embanked to facilitate farming and provide flood defense.
The valley plays host to a diverse array of habitats and creatures, including the uncommon chalk grassland, salt marsh, shingle beach, wetland and woodland. Bird enthusiasts can expect to see lapwings, curlews, redshanks, and skylarks. The region also nurtures diverse wildflower species like yellow horned poppies, sea purslane and glasswort. Butterflies such as Adonis blue and chalkhill blue are often seen fluttering above the grassland.
