Setting Sail on the San Juans

The thrill of the unknown is what drives me, and when I heard about the Orcas Island Whale Watching experience, I knew I had to dive in. The promise of guaranteed whale sightings was too tempting to resist. My crew and I, always on the lookout for the next adrenaline rush, found ourselves in Eastsound, ready to embark on a journey across the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands.

Our captain, Joe, was a character straight out of an adventure novel. His honesty about the absence of orcas that evening was refreshing, and his passion for the sea was infectious. As we set sail, the anticipation was palpable. The evening light painted the sky in hues of blue and pink, and the sight of Mt. Baker in the distance was nothing short of breathtaking. Though the orcas eluded us, the cruise was far from disappointing. Seals, bald eagles, and the majestic Patos Island lighthouse at sunset made for a magical experience. The full moon rising over the San Juans was the cherry on top, a sight that will forever be etched in my memory.

The Call of the Humpback

True to their word, the company offered us a free cruise since we hadn’t seen any whales. The next day, with the promise of a humpback sighting, we were back on the water. The new, fast boats were a thrill in themselves, cutting through the waves with ease. Joe, once again our captain, was determined to make this trip unforgettable.

The moment we spotted the humpback, time seemed to stand still. Watching the magnificent creature swim, spout, and show its tail was a humbling experience. Joe’s enthusiasm for educating us about these gentle giants was contagious, and I found myself captivated by his stories. Alongside the humpback, we were treated to sightings of eagles, a sea lion posing on a rock, and a newborn seal pup. The sunset and moonrise were spectacular, casting a golden glow over the water and creating a scene straight out of a dream.
