Setting Sail on a Family Adventure

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for activities that promise both excitement and education for the whole family. When I heard about the San Juan Islands Tour in Eastsound, I knew it was a must-do for us. The idea of exploring the San Juan Islands aboard a fast boat, with the possibility of spotting whales and other wildlife, was too enticing to pass up.

Our adventure began at the Orcas Island Ferry landing, where we boarded a spacious and stable boat. The kids were thrilled to find out that they had assigned seats, which meant they could leave their backpacks and explore the boat freely. The cabin was cozy, with padded seats and large windows that offered stunning views of the surrounding islands. Captain Bill and naturalist Deb greeted us warmly, and their enthusiasm was infectious. They made sure everyone was comfortable, even handing out heavier coats and binoculars to those who needed them.

Whale Watching Wonders

As we set off, the excitement was palpable. The boat was equipped with a restroom and snacks, making it a comfortable journey for families. We first stopped near an island to observe some large sea lions basking in the sun. The kids were fascinated, and Deb’s explanations about the sea lions’ behavior added an educational twist to the experience.

Captain Bill received a report of humpback whales spotted nearby, so we took a detour in hopes of seeing them. Although we didn’t spot any humpbacks, the thrill of the chase was exhilarating. Our patience was rewarded when we reached the west side of San Juan Island and encountered a pod of Orcas. Deb’s knowledge of the resident pods was impressive, and she shared fascinating insights about the whales we were observing. Watching those majestic dorsal fins rise and fall in the water was a sight to behold, and the kids were absolutely mesmerized.

A Scenic Return

All too soon, it was time to head back to Orcas Island. On our return journey, we cruised past a “bird” island teeming with various sea birds. Deb identified each species for us, turning the ride into an impromptu bird-watching tour. The kids loved spotting the different birds, and it was a perfect way to wind down after the excitement of whale watching.

Even if we hadn’t seen any whales, the beauty of the islands and the experience of being out on the water would have made the trip worthwhile. The San Juan Islands Tour was a perfect blend of adventure, education, and family bonding. It’s an experience I highly recommend to any family looking to create unforgettable memories together.
