Highlights
  • Cotopaxi National Park - On the border of the province of Pichincha, there is the Cotopaxi National Park, an ecological reserve that combines the landscape of the Andean páramo, volcanic soil and the lagoon that emerge from the snow-capped mountains. Its main attraction is the volcano that bears its name which in Spanish means ‘moon neck’ given because of the conical shape of the crater. The elevation of the volcano is of 5,897 meters above sea level and is the second highest in the country. Visitors can discover different species of plants and animals like: wolves, rabbits, bears, condors, and among others that live in that territory.

Visit The Interpretation Center: All information about the Cotopaxi National Park is available at the Interpretation Center, or better known as the Park Museum. The Center has showrooms, a souvenir shop and a coffee shop. It is located inside Mariscal Sucre Station (or Control Caspi entrance).

Walk To The José Rivas Refuge (4864 Masl): Since the 70s, this refuge has been a welcoming place for professional mountaineers and amateurs coming to visit the Cotopaxi Volcano. Its name is in honor of the priest José Ribas who built it with the Mountaineering Club of San Gabriel High School. This place is located on the slopes of the volcano and an hour’s walk from the parking lot.

Excellent trip to Cotopaxi - The day trip to Cotopaxi was amazing! PameR was my guide and she was great. She shared a lot of information not just about the volcano, but about Ecuador in general, which helped put the cultural importance of Cotopaxi into perspective. And everyone in the group made it to base camp!

You should not miss a visit to Cotopaxi! - I did the Cotopaxi tour through "Get Your Guide" with Irene--the experience was amazing, a perfect day to visit the famous Cotopaxi volcano! The tour starts quite early (at 7am), there are pick-up points for hotels or central areas of Quito, and there is a stop for breakfast. Cotopaxi is beautiful, and although the road is difficult, there are several walking options depending on the experience and condition of the participants. You have to bring enough clothes, jackets, gloves, and hats--or you can buy these things at the park entrance. There is also a short excursion to the lagoon in the park, and a stop for lunch. Our guide Irene was amazing--she did the tour in both Spanish and English, explained the history of the volcano and park, shared information about the fauna of the region, and usually had a positive energy that motivated the group! She is always checking to see that all participants are safe and enjoying their visit. It is clear that she is super passionate about her work, and it was something very special to travel to Cotopaxi with her, as a person with a lot of experience in exploring the park, and experienced as a guide.

Cotopaxi Volcano Tour - First and foremost I just want to say our tour guide, PameR was amazing. She really took care of us and was very informative. As for the trip the views were breathtaking even with the clouds sometimes blocking the Volcano. While the hike was difficult for us since we are not used to the elevation it was still a fun time. I highly recommend this tour just try to properly acclimatize before hand.
