Journey to the Heart of Cotopaxi

As the sun began to rise over Quito, I found myself eagerly anticipating the adventure that lay ahead. The Cotopaxi Full-Day Tour promised an exploration of one of Ecuador’s most iconic natural wonders, and as a biologist with a deep love for the Andes’ unique ecosystems, I couldn’t resist the call of the Cotopaxi volcano. Our journey began with a comfortable drive out of the bustling city, the early morning light casting a golden hue over the Andean landscape. Our guide, a master of both English and Spanish, seamlessly switched between languages, ensuring everyone felt included and informed. The drive was punctuated with stops at local shops, where we sampled traditional snacks and beverages, each bite and sip a testament to Ecuador’s rich culinary heritage.

The Ascent to José Rivas Refuge

Arriving at Cotopaxi National Park, the air was crisp and invigorating, a perfect day for a hike.
