- Edfu Temple - The Temple of Edfu is an ancient Egyptian temple situated on the west bank of the Nile in Edfu, Upper Egypt. During the Hellenistic period, the city was known in Koine Greek as Ἀπόλλωνος πόλις and in Latin as Apollonopolis Magna, named after the chief deity Horus, who was equated with Apollo under the interpretatio graeca.[1] It stands as one of the most well-preserved shrines in Egypt. Constructed in the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BC, the temple’s wall inscriptions offer valuable insights into the language, mythology, and religion of the Hellenistic period in Egypt. Notably, the Temple’s inscribed building texts “provide details [both] of its construction, and also preserve information about the mythical interpretation of this and all other temples as the Island of Creation.”[2] Additionally, there are “important scenes and inscriptions of the Sacred Drama which related the age-old conflict between Horus and Seth.”[2] These have been translated by the Edfu-Project.
- Temple of Kom Ombo - The Temple of Kom Ombo is a unique double temple located in the town of Kom Ombo in Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt. It was built during the Ptolemaic dynasty, between 180–47 BC.[1] Some enhancements were later made during the Roman period.
