Temple of Horus - The construction of the Edfu Temple started on 23 August 237 BC under Ptolemy III and initially contained only a pillared hall, two diagonal halls, and a sanctuary surrounded by chapels. We know this because the Edfu Temple is one of the best preserved shrines in Egypt. The walls provide details of the construction, the religious myths and the family history of the God Horus to whom the temple was dedicated. The Edfu Temple is deeply connected to the Hathor Temple in Denderah and was the center of large festivals. Horus was married to his aunt Hathor and each year she traveled south from Denderah to visit Horus in Edfu.
In 1860, Auguste Mariette, a French Egyptologist, identified the top of the temples’ pylons and began the work of freeing the Edfu temple from the sands. It is nearly intact and a very good example of an ancient Egyptian temple.

An expert guide fluent in English will accompany you as you journey southward past quaint villages. The construction of the Edfu Temple commenced on August 23, 237 BC under the reign of Ptolemy III, originally featuring only a pillar-filled hall, two cross halls, and a sanctuary enveloped by chapels. The high preservation level of the Edfu Temple provides such details. The temple’s walls recount its construction, the religious myths associated with it, and the familial lineage of the deity Horus, to whom the temple was assigned. The connection between the Edfu Temple and the Hathor Temple in Denderah is profound as it was the epicenter of substantial festivals. Horus, who was wed to his aunt Hathor, annually received her visit from Denderah to Edfu.
In 1860, French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette discovered the pinnacles of the temple and initiated the process of unearthing the Edfu Temple from the sands. The temple is remarkably well-preserved, serving as an exemplary specimen of ancient Egyptian architecture. The day concludes with your return to your hotel.
