Highlights

Edinburgh to Inverness

Dunkeld - Our first stop of the day is Dunkeld in the heart of Perthshire. Known for its 13th century cathedral, this is the perfect spot to fuel up with a coffee and pastry from a charming local bakery.

Highland Folk Museum - The Highland Folk Museum is Britain’s first open-aired museum and an opportunity to experience firsthand how highlanders lived, worked and socialised from the 1700s.

Culloden Battlefield - One of the most somber locations in Scotland, Culloden Battlefield remains mostly untouched to pay respect to those who lost their lives in the final Jacobite Uprising of 1746.

Clava Cairns - Visit one of the inspirations behind Outlander - the Clava Cairns standing stones. These stones stand proudly at 10 feet tall and are known for being a bronze age burial ground.

Inverness to Orkney

Dunrobin Castle and Gardens - The incredibly beautiful Dunrobin Castle traces its origins back to the 13th century, recognised as one of Britain’s oldest inhabited houses. The castle is known for its French-inspired architecture, making it stand out from other Scottish castles. We also have the opportunity to observe a falconry display.

North Coast 500 - Experience the rugged charm of Scotland’s very own “route 66”. We pass Wick, Helmsdale, and stop to visit some stops. Visit the haunting remains of Badbea, a township cleared during the period known as the Highland Clearances and descend down Whaligoe Steps to view a traditional fish-landing station.

Orkney Islands - We head over the sea to Orkney by way of ferry for our last leg of the day. Upon arrival your guide drives you to Kirkwall, where you settle in for the night.

Orkney

The Italian Chapel - The breathtaking Italian Chapel was built during World War Two using two Nissen huts. The chapel was the dream child of Italian prisoners of war who were based on the island and is now one of Orkney’s best-loved attractions.

Ring of Brodgar - Follow in the footsteps of humans 5000 years ago at this epic stone circle. The Ring of Brodgar is a vast and mysterious archaeological gem, and the most iconic site in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.

Skara Brae - Visit Skara Brae, an incredibly well-preserved neolithic village consisting of 10 houses. Its existence was only discovered in the 19th century after it was uncovered during a storm. We learn about the peaceful community of farmers and fishermen who once lived there and take in the incredible ocean views which surround it.

Orkney Islands - We spend the afternoon exploring: from Mae’s Howe to Earls Bu; Round church to Orkney Brewery; your guide will organize an afternoon packed with storytelling and Orcadian adventure.

Orkney to Ullapool

John O’Groats - We hop on a ferry back to the mainland where our adventurers continue! We arrive in John O’Groats, the northernmost point of Great Britain.

North Coast 500 - We continue our journey along the North Coast 500. When it comes to this drive, there’s no such thing as “too far”. Your guide takes you to every unmissable stop and view along the way, so sit back and enjoy.

Durness - We make a stop in Durness to visit Sango Sands beach for our lunch break and the chance to enjoy one of Scotland’s beautiful highland beaches.

Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve - Marvel at the scenery and mild-blowing geology of the North-West Highlands with a walk through Knockan Crag Nature Reserve.

Ullapool to Portree

Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve - Today we head for the land of faeries; Skye! Our first stop of the day is at Corrieshalloch Gorge, one of the most impressive gorges in the UK. The gorge was formed from melted glacial water and stands approximately 1.5 km long, 60m deep, and 10m wide.

Eilean Donan Castle - Next we stop at the most photographed castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan. Eilean Donan Castle has links to both clans MacKenzie and MacRae, and is the perfect place to stop before today’s final destination – Skye.

Portree - We arrive in Skye in time for lunch, stopping at the island’s largest settlement Portree with its charming high street and local eateries.

The Old Man of Storr - When it comes to cool geology, this natural wonder is the absolute pinnacle. Standing tall on Skye’s ancient landslip, the Old Man of Storr is such a poser. Sometimes hidden by mist, this is a popular hangout for mischievous fairies.

Kilt Rock - Soak up the iconic view of Kilt Rock, a rugged cliff which resembles – you’ve guessed it – a kilt. Marvel at the breathtaking Mealt Waterfall as it runs into the ocean.

Portree to Oban

Glenfinnan Viaduct - The Jacobite Steam Train and Glenfinnan Viaduct have shot to worldwide fame since starring in the Harry Potter films, and whether you’re a fan or not, a ride on this classic train is an experience like no other. The West Highland Line between Mallaig and Fort William is famous for its wildly beautiful scenery and dreamy sands of the west coast. The train steams over the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct with views across the stunning Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie famously landed in August 1745. Along the coast, you can see the silhouette of the Small Isles, and the bonnie beaches at Arisaig and Morar. You’ll quickly understand why it’s been voted the most scenic rail journey in the world.

Glencoe - Glencoe is dominated by majestic mountains which completely contrast the vast and flat expanse of its neighbouring Rannoch Moor. Buachaille Etive Mòr, which overlooks the moor, is a bonnie brute of a mountain, and a fond favourite with photographers. Your guide will take you through Glencoe’s sad history; you will truly feel like you have been transported through time.

Oban to Oban

Oban - Today is your free day to explore the charming fishing village of Oban! Your guide is on hand to offer suggestions of what to see and do, but as you will soon find out, there is no shortage of exciting things to see or tasty local seafood to eat. Enjoy!

Oban to Edinburgh

St Conan’s Kirk - St. Conan’s Kirk, which sits on the banks of Loch Awe. Built between 1881 and 1886, St. Conan’s sits amongst an enchanting forest and is the heart of Dalmally’s local community.

Kilchurn Castle - Kilchurn Castle was built in the mid-1400s by Sir Colin Campbell, the 1st Lord of Glenorchy. Today the castle is derelict and sits dramatically on a rocky peninsula.

Scottish Highlands - Take the opportunity to explore a charming Highland village for some lunch and the chance to stretch your legs. Your guide will recommend all the best stops for coffee and food.

Falls of Dochart - Next we make a stop at the impressive Falls of Dochart which run through the village of Killin. The perfect peaceful stop for a bit of respite and reflection

The Kelpies & The Helix - The Kelpies are a stunning spectacle of modern engineering, designed by Scottish artist Andy Scott. Kelpies are mythological beasts in Scottish folklore, and this fantastic equine landmark is the largest of its kind in the world, “neighing” at a height of 30 meters and weighing a mighty 300 tonnes.

8 Days of Wonder - We had the most fabulous tour guide in Louise. She was a fountain of knowledge and told the most amazing stories. Scotland is a beautiful country and I can’t wait to come back and see it again. Louise took us to some incredible places like Dunrobin Castle, The kelpies, up to the Orkneys to see Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Steness. Highly recommend this tour and if you get the lovely Louise as your guide you are in good hands.

Great memories - Being a couple of kiwis we absolutely made the right decision to choose highland explorer tours on this 8 day tour in May.Rich was the ultimate guide and went out of his way to accommodate us on the trip, for example he took us to the falkirk wheel which wasn't on the itinerary and was on our bucket list. Our fellow passengers were all great. We especially liked Oban and Inverness, make sure you have dinner at a pub with traditional music,The Highlander pub in Inverness is a must visit with the live music and great food. .The accommodation exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend this tour .Once again THANK YOU RICH

Superb!!!!!!!!!!!! - The 8 day Orkney, Skye and North Coast 500 with Highland Explorer was superb in itself, but Steve our tour leader added an extra brilliance to it. His deep love for the Highlands and Islands was infectious. On most of the route there was constantly changing beautiful scenery and he kept us entertained with his knowledge of history and legends, his varied playlist, and his often wickedly funny anecdotes and jokes. He managed to fit into the already well-packed, advertised schedule little extras, such as the on-going archaeological dig to see walls 5500- year-old, a zip wire for the teenage member of the group and petting highland cattle. He also fitted in little detours to out-of-the-way places he had discovered by himself, such as the island where many clan chiefs are buried. We are glad to say that Steve could not provide the shopping malls and Disneyland experiences that the passenger from Sarasota FL seemed to expect. The route was efficiently planned and the accommodation was universally immaculately clean, well-maintained and friendly, although rather compact and sometimes quaint. It was always located within easy walking distance of a variety of local food and drink. Steve was always able to point out good places to eat and where we might find local live music, which was on more than one person’s wish-list. He gave excellent information about activities we might choose for his day off in Oban, enabling some to visit a distillery, some to spot puffins and other wild life and some to explore the town on foot. We had a few opportunities for short walks to viewpoints, and Steve knew when to be there to avoid crowds. At least five of us are well into our 70s but had no difficulty with these walks and we found them well worth the small effort. We were amazingly lucky with mostly clear, clement weather, with our wonderful guide Steve and a truly companionable group (apart from one). A bunch of 25-year-olds would have fitted right in too, though.

The 8-Day Highlands Tour with Steve was Incredible - This small group tour was amazing! We visited even more sites than I expected, and all were worthwhile. Many were spectacular! Steve’s friendly commentary, stories and music playlist were icing on the cake. In addition to multiple stops each day that often included some free time, we had evenings on our own to explore the towns where we stayed. Accommodations were clean, comfortable and safe, and most offered a cooked breakfast. Most of our group, including my husband and I, were 60+. Except for one, all were willing and physically able to visit the sites up close, which sometimes meant walking/light hiking 15-20 minutes or so. If you have physical limitations or would prefer not to be active, this might not be the tour for you. But if you want to experience and embrace the magic and beauty of the highlands, I highly recommend this small group tour with Steve!

Stellar experience, hands down - If you want to have a Fantastic trip and an experience of a lifetime, then go with Highland Explorer Tours and Steve will ABSOLUTELY ensure that. My mother, nephew & I took the 8-day tour and would take it another 10 times with Highland Explorer Tours. Our guide, the highly-esteemed Steve, was phenomenal, hands down. Besides his effortless maneuvering of the van (crazy highland single-track roads), while dropping knowledge, he also provided a fantastic playlist. He had everyone in the van laughing, telling jokes & singing; quickly bonding as a group. This tour brought us to all of my Mom’s ‘bucket list’ places & showed us locations that should have been on that list; just Gorgeous- It also saved me from the concern of driving & organizing it all myself. It was Absolutely worth it, 100%. The accommodations were clean, comfortable & helpful with questions about operating showers & toilet buttons. Some rooms were jaw-droppingly gorgeous & I even got a deep, long tub one night! 💙 I didn’t always sleep great because it was a different bed than my own, but there was always plenty of coffee every morning, I couldn’t let a little sleepiness hold me down. It should be noted that a fellow traveler (a female from Sarasota,FL) didn’t like her B&B & had a meltdown much later the following day. She completely exploded on Steve, taking Everyone off guard, yelling & even swearing in front of a minor. I feel Steve handled the situation well & diffused the tension over the break & in the van afterwards. Her claims were shocking, unfounded and completely out of line that she was being singled out & treated “like $#^%”. My guess is that she was dealing with something else entirely, that had nothing to do with the trip and focused that rage on Steve. Poor guy, seriously- everyone Loves him. Anyone traveling should be aware of general safety policies, everyone off the bus & locking it up is designed to protect everyone’s belongings. Also be prepared when traveling to Scotland, do your homework- there are pubs everywhere (bring earplugs, use the extra pillow on your head), it rains, there’s bugs that’ll bite you (midges) and the food is different (bring something to aide digestion, just in case). We lucked out on all fronts in my opinion but the key is flexibility to have a good time. There’s a lot of walking & some stairs so bring walking sticks to spare you knees, if needed. So again, if you WANT to have an Amazing, Fantastic trip and/or a Stellar Experience of a Lifetime -Please- go with Highland Explorer Tours and Steve will Absolutely ensure that.

North Coast 500 - A wonderful trip from start to finish. Our driver/guide was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and fun to be with. Cara was a considerate driver on the narrow roads. She ordered ahead for us so we could enjoy fresh lobster at a pop-up cafe. The accommodation was comfortable and there were plenty of places to choose our evening meals.

Great guide and small group - This was the perfect-sized tour of 10 travelers and our amazing guide-navigator-historian-driver-translator- biologist and animal lover, Louise. She regaled us with stories of the lore of Scotland, sprinkling in interesting facts on the geology, political issues of the day and their impact on Scotland today. She also has an amazing playlist that includes Scottish music and story teller. The highlands of Scotland are vast. Taking a sprinter is a great way to see the country side with out the worry of driving on narrow roads in a rental car or being just a number on a large coach. We spent the right amount of time at each site.

Beautiful scenery - I tried to get the hotel info in advance but they kept telling me it would be closer to the time. An hour ahead each day was the earliest I found out where we were staying. Consequently the hotel standard was not what I expected and we could have done the same tour for much less money. They were one star accommodations and one of our rooms was on an alley next to a divey pub. If I had received the hotel info when I booked the tour I would not have booked this tour. We arrived at 5pm or 6pm each day so had little time in the towns except to eat and sleep. 3pm would have been better. Much too much time cliff hiking for me. The tour description did not specify that I would not be able to sit on the bus if I didn’t want to hike or stand in the rain. Best for 25 year olds.
