5 star and more tour! - Both me and my 15yr old daughter loved this experience which is an accomplishment in itself!!!
Michael the guide was the most captivating storyteller and had us both transported back to hundreds of years ago.
We especially loved the small group aspect to the tour.
Thanks to the Mercat Team

A must do in Edinburgh. - On a weekend trip to Edinburgh, I was super excited about this tour. I had done one years ago and it was amazing. This time, it was even better! Our tour guide, Shannon, was incredible. The two-hour tour flew in, I could have stayed longer. I highly recommend these tours to anyone who’s visiting Edinburgh.

Anastasia was incredible and gave a marvelous ghost tour - My dear friend Ann and I did the 4pm ghost and vault tour on Saturday. Anastasia led the tour. She was wonderful, I love the way she told the stories and as my friend was older she was very considerate in lighting the way for her. I would definitely recommend it. A great way to learn Edinburgh history and get your scare on.

Doomed, Dead, and Buried in Knowledge! - I went on the Doomed, Dead and Buried tour on Sunday 26th Jan 2025 following a rescheduling from Friday 24th - the original tour was cancelled (rightly) due to concerns about storm Éowyn - the team contacted me the day before the tour to offer a transfer of my tickets to another day, or a full refund - I chose to go on the Sunday tour instead, so very quick and easy communication from the team before the tour had even begun!
The tour itself was wonderful, our guide was Anastasia, and they told us many stories about the darker history of Edinburgh, as we stood in places relevant to the stories. This tour goes through the old town of Edinburgh, then down into the vaults, then the Canongate cemetery. Anastasia really brought each location and story to life and kept everyone engaged and looked after. I learned a lot and was really impressed with Anastasia's storytelling! There were lots and lots of stories packed into the duration of the tour, it's really good value for money in my opinion! They also took extra questions at the end - we asked about some Edinburgh history completely unrelated to the tour and they told us all about it as we walked back up the hill, and were generally very friendly and helpful! They even gave us some insight into what life in the city is like today!
For anyone worried about the logistics of the tour, here is some info:
- the only staff member is the tour guide, nobody additional will jump out at you - it is the stories that are scary, it's not a haunted-house style thing
- there are a fair few narrow staircases which you will need to go up and down so it is not accessible to anyone who cannot do stairs. The streets that come off the Royal Mile are also really steep and it is easy to slip down them, so wear very grippy shoes if possible and take it slow. Anastasia warned us in advance of us beginning our descent down these streets, so we knew what was coming.
- the tour guide will speak into a microphone and you will be given a short range radio type device with over head headphones that allows you to hear the guide more clearly, but they will just be in front of you so this audio device just helps you hear over the part of the tour with busy streets, you probably won't need it inside the vaults if you want to minimise your use of it. You can bring your own headphones/earphones but they HAVE to be wired, the devices don't do bluetooth.
- short videos and photos were allowed.
- there is minimal airflow into the vaults and no HEPA filter as far as I could tell.
- it is warm down in the vaults, but the streets will obviously be as warm or as cold as the weather on the day dictates.
- this tour is 18+ only, but there are some earlier in the day that allow children
- the tour started and finished pretty much on time as advertised
- I booked through the mercat tours website, I did not use a third party and cannot comment on the helpfulness/refund policy of any third party, I would definitely recommend going through the official site based on my experience
- the tour was in English listening to a live guide, the audio devices are NOT pre-recordings they just amplify the guide's voice for you as they speak live, so there is no facility for you to listen along in another language
Overall, it was an excellent experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone

Super fun way to spend an evening - It was an amazing tour! We did the Dooned Dead and Buried. Our guide Anastasia was so engaging, and gave us a great mix of history and ghost stories. The headsets were a great addition and increased the drama so much!

Great tour - Great spooky tour with guide Shannon! Stories of the vaults and the graveyard. The headphones that were supplied made it easy to hear the guide over the traffic and made it so that it was unlike other ghost tours.

Top teir professionalism and an out of this world guide! - Michael the tour guide was absolutely fantastic! His storytelling was amazing and really sucked you into the story. His humour really added to the stories and historical information too. We loved this tour so much that since we are local we’ve decided to return at some point in the near future. As fellow guides ourselves, the professionalism from the company and guide was top tier! Absolutely would recommend this to anyone!

Good Tour - This was a super fun tour! Getting the opportunity to go down into the vaults was a magical experience. The spook factor as probably a 3.5/5 but brought up to a 4/5 by Shannon's fabulous storytelling. The headsets made the tour super accessible though they did cut out a fair amount as we ascended and descended into the vaults.
