Highlights

This 8-hour day trip begins at 9 am with a pick-up from your hotel or guesthouse in Pärnu or the Soomaa region. The drive to Soomaa National Park takes less than an hour. Upon arrival, you’ll receive life-jackets and paddles, and then embark on a canoe trip on the Raudna River. The rivers flowing through Soomaa National Park significantly shape the local landscapes. When rainwater or meltwater runs off the Sakala Upland, the rivers in Soomaa, which flow on flat terrain, cannot accommodate all the water at once and overflow their usual channels. This exceptionally high water level, accompanied by flooding, is known as the ‘fifth season’ in Soomaa.

We will pass beautiful floodplain meadows and within the first hour reach Lemmjõgi Forest, where many traces of beaver activity can be seen. At the confluence of the Raudna and Lemmjõgi rivers, we will take the canoes ashore and go for our first walk of the day. The forest trail runs along the riverbanks and is often covered with floodplain forest. Broad-leaved trees such as elms, oaks, lindens, ashes, maples, and European white elms grow in this alluvial forest, which are becoming increasingly rare in Estonia.

After another hour of canoeing, it will be time for a picnic lunch. Then we will go for a walk to Kuresoo Bog, the largest bog (11,000 ha) in Estonia, which is almost untouched by human activity. It features large open areas that serve as ideal resting sites for passing geese and cranes. In the southern part of the bog, which we will explore, is the highest and steepest bog slope documented in Estonia, reaching up to 8 meters. The best way to enjoy the views of this natural phenomenon is on the Ingatsi study trail.

Around 4 pm, we will drive back to Pärnu, arriving at your hotel around 5 pm.

Incredible and unique experience in very special place - Absolutely loved walking in the bogs of Soomaa National Park. A truly special landscape. Wandering with bog shoes is a unique experience unlike any other hike I have done. I highly recommend trying it. Aivar, our host, was extremely hospitable and helpful too.

Aivar Is An Absolute Legend. - If you're looking to explore the most pristine parts of Soomaa, this is the guide you need. He and his family have been leading guests through the bogs and forests of southwestern Estonia for literally as long as the country has existed. His knowledge of the flora and fauna is expert level, and he communicates all of that information in a fun and friendly manner. Don't miss the chance to go paddling in one of his customary Estonian dugout canoes that he builds by hand. And the bog-swimming is an experience you won't ever forget! Thanks so mcuh, Aivar!

Late night canoe trip and beaver safari - Me and a group of my nature photography students went for a late night canoe tour with Aivar in May. This was the second time we did this and both time we've been able to see and take pictures of beavers. One beaver appeared right next to my canoe and we had a brief moment of eye contact - amazing! Aivar is skilled, funny and can communicate in at least Estonian, Swedish, English and Finnish. I recommend taking this late night tour because the beavers are more active and the experience is nice cruising slowly down the stream. Towards the end the sun went down and you can see bats flying above you. Attached photos are by Linda Öhman.

Exicting short-trip through the wilderness - Great guide, super interesting fun facts and an amazing landscape. We started with a guided walk through the bog. The guide explained a great deal about the surrounding area. After the bog we stepped into a canoe and paddled to the starting spot.

Magical, mostly silent night canoe - I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet night canoe tour. no physical exercise, though: Our friendly guide paddled and let us see and listen into the wilderness.

Highly recommended - Very pleasant and instructive walk in a wondrous environment. Great guide, knowledgeable, with plenty of anecdotes and even some local songs. The canoeing was less pleasant and felt a little rushed. Expect mosquitoes and horse flies in huge numbers in the woods and on the river.
