- 18 Septemberplein - The 18 Septemberplein, named after the day Eindhoven was liberated in World War II. To keep the square as free as possible from cyclists, an underground bicycle parking was built, the ‘Tube.’ The unique entrances to the bike cellar, resembling tubes emerging from the ground, especially catch the attention. However, what many people may not know is that archaeological finds are on display in this bicycle cellar. These ruins came to light through excavation work, revealing parts of a 700-year-old gateway, for example.
- De Blob - The Blob, where Blob is an abbreviation for ‘Binary Large OBject.’ In architecture, BLOB refers to a style where the exterior of a building has irregular shapes. On the other side of the 18 Septemberplein stands a similar structure, the Bubble. As the name suggests, it is a soap bubble, but made of glass and steel. The Bubble is often considered the little sister of the Blob. However, this structure was designed by a different architect, namely Tarra architecture and urban planning.
- Lichttoren - You’ll also see the Lichttoren on your walking tour. It owes its name to the lamp factory that was once located there. The burning lamps in the evening were visible far into the surroundings.
- Philips Museum - The Philips Museum is a must-see during your stroll. It is located in the building of Philips’ first light bulb factory. Various manufacturers had occupied the building until a fire broke out, leaving almost nothing of it. The reconstruction began in 1888, and in 1891, Gerard Philips purchased the building. The museum takes you through the story of the first light bulb factory, showcasing the significant innovations Philips has made for over 120 years. During the tour, you only visit the museum externally.
- Dommeltunnel - After seeing the Grote Markt and visiting other museums like the Van Abbemuseum and the DAF Museum, you pass through the Dommel tunnel, known for its unique murals. The paintings are inspired by the Monty Python sketch “The Ministry of Silly Walks.” Some know the tunnel as the “Silly Walks Tunnel.”

Eindhoven is a contemporary city, often known as the “City of Light.” Contrary to popular belief, this nickname wasn’t earned because of the Philips corporation. Instead, it comes from the match factories that set up in Eindhoven starting in 1970.
Don’t expect to see many historical buildings in Eindhoven, as much of the city was destroyed during World War II. However, you’ll find modern and stylish structures, along with numerous design elements. Eindhoven is also a fantastic place for shopping.
