El Alamein War Museum - The guide will collect visitors in Cairo and transport them to El Alamein in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle to start the tour at the El Alamein War Museum. Upon arrival, guests will find separate rooms dedicated to the four main countries involved in the war: Great Britain, Italy, Germany, and Egypt.
German, Italian, Libyan, Greek Cemeteries and Hans-Joachim Marseille Tomb
El Alamein War Cemetery - After gaining historical insights at the museum, the first stop will be the German cemetery, designed as a fortress. It holds 4,213 German burials from World War II and 30 from World War I. The Italian Cemetery is located near the World War II front line. The Libyan Cemetery honors forces that fought alongside Italians. The Greek cemetery contains the remains of Greek soldiers and officers who fell in October 1942.
After a fulfilling day, guests will be driven to their hotel in Alexandria for a delightful meal and a restful night.
Catacombs, Pompey Pillars, and Commonwealth
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Begin the morning with a visit to the Catacombs of Alexandria, the largest and most significant burial site in Egypt, reflecting the Egyptian tradition of honoring the deceased. The Greco-Roman influence is evident throughout the necropolis. Visitors will descend a spiral staircase to explore the tombs, where over 300 mummies were interred. Discovered by chance in the early 20th century, the Kom El Shoqafa catacombs showcase a blend of Roman, Hellenistic, Pharaonic, and Ancient Egyptian art, typical of Alexandria during that era.
Pompey’s Pillar - Pompey’s Pillar is one of Alexandria’s most prominent landmarks, featuring a massive granite column from Roman times. The name originated from the crusaders’ belief that it marked Pompey’s burial site. It is said that Ptolemy XIII presented Pompey’s head to Caesar as a triumph. However, 19th-century research revealed that the shaft is actually from the Column of Serapis, originating from the Serapeum of Alexandria, destroyed in 391, long after Diocletian’s reign.
Chatby Tombs - Dating back to around 300 BC, the Chatby Tombs, though smaller than those in Luxor or Aswan, remain intriguing. With approximately 50 burial sites, it is a lesser-known location that few visit while in Egypt.
At the end of the day, Egyptoria Tour Guides will return guests to a prearranged drop-off point, bidding farewell until the next tour.
