Great experience on comfortable kayaks with Arenal volcano as backdrop - My wife and paid 20 dollars each to take out a double kayak on the very clean, calm, Arenal lake with Arenal volcano as a beautiful backdrop. Very peaceful and relaxing with only the interesting wildlife to break the silence. Federico spoke very good English and was very happy to help us with everything we needed. The kayaks have comfortable seats and I would thoroughly recommend doing this.

Great experience - Knowledgeable guide who answered all of our questions about the area and was patient with teaching us since we had little experience with paddle boarding.

Unique experience with an amazing view - We had an amazing time with our guide, Fred. He provided details about the volcano and the area. He was super nice and took photos of our family as we paddled out toward the volcano. Would highly recommend this experience.

Tour guide went at his own speed - I thought about giving this five stars because we loved it so much. But I want families with young children or those less physically fit to be aware of our experience. It started pouring just a few minutes into our experience, I had my 11 year old in my kayak with me. Our tour guide took off and never came back. The large group that was with us turned back and my kid and I waited out the rain. It was pouring so hard we we couldn’t make any progress with paddling and spent a half hour catching up afterwards while the tour guide was sharing cool facts about the lake, volcano, and howler monkeys you could hear (thankfully the other adults up front were a part of our group and caught me up while we were changing afterwards). It was a bit frustrating that as a guide he never circled around to make sure everyone was safe and making progress, he didn’t slow his pace for the families with young ones, and left us out of the information he was sharing by getting to points a, b, and c and spewing it then turning and leaving as soon as we got there. We also were told that we had a 15 minute grace window to get there, but when we messaged and said we’d be 10 minutes late we’re told that we may not be able to participate at all. Then when we got there no one was ready and the other group had members showing up nearly 30 minutes after we were supposed to start. We didn’t actually get in the water and leave until close to 60 minutes after our selected start time. In general it was a super unique experience, but it could have been better. My kid and I ended up loving being in the rain on the lake, everyone else cleared out so it was quiet and serene, since the storm passed over us from the volcano, it ended up clearing up beautifully and we saw the entire thing, and I got a good workout.

Paddle boarding at volcano - Nice activity. Weather didn’t cooperate as we couldn’t see the volcano due to heavy clouds. Guide was a nice guy.

This was a poor time on Lake Arenal - This was not a good experience. The only thing keeping this from a 1 star rating was the guide was friendly. The guide gave us no instruction prior to getting into our kayaks. Once we were all in the water he proceeded to take off as if he was doing his own workout. He never looked back to check on our group. At times he was a speck on the horizon he was so far away from us. It started to rain and the wind was whipping us to the point it was very difficult to row the kayaks. The guide didn’t care. He just made a beeline for the shore and offered us a measley powerbar at the halfway point. We were exhausted. He didn’t really tell us anything noteworthy except that the lake is manmade. 2 hours wasted. And that was a significant Uber ride to get there and back from La Fortuna. The worst experience we had in Costa Rica. Not because of the kayak experience per se.. but the “guide” was anything but. I would’ve rather spent the $55 on food that gave me food poisoning than do that again.
