• Portuguese City - El Jadida’s main attraction, Portuguese City, is a compact labyrinth of winding streets enclosed by ochre-colored ramparts. The primary entrance is just off PI Mohamed Ben Abdellah and leads into Rue Mohamed Ahchemi Rahbai.
• Church of the Assumption - The Church of the Assumption, which was under restoration at the time of research, is set to open as an upscale hotel. Almost adjacent is the Grand Mosque, featuring a unique pentagonal-shaped minaret that originally served as a lighthouse.
• La Citerne Portugaise - On the main street, past the souvenir shops, lies a vast, vaulted cistern illuminated by a single beam of light. This remarkably serene spot, with a thin layer of water on the floor reflecting a mirror image of the vaulted ceiling and elegant columns, was originally used to collect water. It is famous as the eerie location for the dramatic riot scene in Orson Welles’ 1954 film, Othello.
• Le Port d’El Jadida - La Porte de la Mer (Sea Gate), where ships once unloaded their cargo and from where the Portuguese finally departed. To the left of the gate, through the archway, is one of the town’s communal bakeries, where local women bring their bread to be baked.
• Jewish Cemetery of El Jadida - To the right of the Sea Gate, a ramp leads up to the windy rampart and Bastion de L’Ange (Southeast Corner), an excellent vantage point with views of the sea, the new town, and the port. From Bastion de St. Sebastian, you can see the old Jewish Cemetery. Next to the bastion is the abandoned synagogue (originally the old prison) with its Star of David.

This old Portuguese town, in 1506 the Portuguese built a fortress to protect their ships and baptized it Mazagan, which soon developed into the country’s most important trading post. For much of the year El Jadida is a quiet backwater, disturbed only by the crowds of Moroccans flocking to its beautiful beaches and strolling its Boulevard in July and August. Over the last few years, both Moroccans and foreigners have started buying up property in the old walled town, including the old colonial church. North of the town on a gorgeous stretch of beach, it the recently opened tourist resort of MAZAGAN, which included Golf course, Casino, Spa and large resort hotel. The old town of El Jadida will be given a new, if very different, lease of life in the next few years.
