Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الرفاعي, also transliterated as Al-Rifai, Al-Refai, Al-Refa’i, and locally known as El-Refa’i, and in English: the Refaai Mosque) is situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel. The mosque is named after Ali Abu Shubbak, who is buried there. It also serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. The mosque is located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361. It was designed to complement the older structure as part of a 19th-century campaign by Egypt’s rulers to associate themselves with the glory of earlier Islamic periods and modernize the city.

Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Next, visit one of Cairo’s largest and most significant mosques, the Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as
Madrasa El Sultan Hassan
. Founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D., this massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa is located near the Citadel in Cairo. Construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and was completed three years later without any delays. At the time, the mosque was notable for its size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a relatively obscure sultan, the mosque includes several architectural wonders and was designed to house schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali. -
Al-Azhar Mosque - The tour continues with a visit to Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent. Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970 for the newly established capital, its name is believed to refer to Fatimah, the daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who was given the title az-Zahrā (the shining or resplendent one). It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets”.
-
Al-Hussein Mosque - Conclude your day tour with a visit to the Al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo. Also known as the Mosque of al-Imam al-Husayn (Arabic: مسجد الإمام ٱلحُسين) and the Mosque of Sayyidna al-Husayn, this mosque and mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali was originally built in 1154 and later reconstructed in 1874. Located near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar and the famous Al-Azhar Mosque, in an area known as Al-Hussain, it is considered one of the holiest Islamic sites in Egypt. Some Shia Muslims believe that Husayn’s head (ra’s mubarak) is buried in the mosque’s mausoleum, which is one of the remaining examples of Fatimid architecture.
At the end of the tour, our guide will transfer you back to your hotel in Cairo.
